So, I'm giving the Boss TU-3 a shot, I have a gig to play shortly and ordered one. So far I've been playing in small spaces and the built in tuner in my Orange amp suited just fine, but it sure had the disadvantage of me having to walk and check it everytime I thought something was out of tune.

A tuner pedal is much more like it... Thing is, some people say they alter you tone because they buffer just like any other pedal.

What do you guys use?

I use a Boss TU3.
If you're worried about it altering your tone, don't (worry). When playing gigs in small venues there are so many other things that'll be altering your tone much more such as room acoustics, number of people in the venue etc etc.

I agree with this and love mine.

Mostly, I tune by ear.
But when using a pedal, I use a TC Polytune Mini. It's nice to strum all the strings and immediately see which ones are high or low. It has true bypass too, and doesn't take up much room. (They have a bigger model too.)

The problem with tuning by ear is that many times the gig is so noisy that you have to make quite an effort to hear yourself playing, let alone tune each string right.

Too much noise is killing. I myself need a tuner...

Waiting for the TU-3 to come (I ordered it).

I play bass, and have used the Boss TU-3 every day for several years now. I don't notice any change in tone on bypass. Engaged it allows for silent tuning and it's extremely accurate too! 8)

For noisy places, I use a Vox AC-30 emulating mini-headphone-amp with a single earplug (well, there used to be two, but really only need one). $40 for the "amp", $10 for an earplug. It's really useful, and the whole thing with the plug wrapped around it fits in my pocket. It can also be plugged into a pedal to test out the settings without anyone else hearing anything.

One advantage to tuning by ear is that you hear whether there's a dull string too. The Polytune, great as it is, won't tell me.

I use a Snark pedal tuner. Works very well, and the large, bright display is a big plus. It was only 20 or so quid, too!

I also use the poly tune and have for several years now with no issues at all. When gigging a good tuner is a must have.

Just my $.02 worth...

Very technically speaking, any time you add a "device" to your sound chain, tuner or otherwise, you do in fact alter the sound. In most cases, particularly if said device has a "true bypass" this alteration is EXCEPTIONALLY minimal and typically can only be detected by sensitive electronic equipment (ala an oscilloscope), however it -IS- there. Anytime you add something to your signal chain, you change the impedance/resistance in the chain a bit. That said, 99.9% of the time you can't really hear it at all.

Now that aside, while I have used a number of tuners over the years, Boss, Dano, Bananna and others, for my money you just can't beat a Snark! My SN-1, which was only $15, does an outstanding job with my guitars...dead nuts accurate, it's singularly the easiest tuner to read on stage and you don't have to fiddle with extra cables or anything like that. In fact my Snark SN-2 is sensitive enough to actually tune my Autoharp! I even know a guy who runs a vintage guitar shop who switched from a Sabine rack mount to a Snark for doing his setup work.

I won't speak for others and I'm sure that Boss will serve you well, but for my money, I will NEVER own another tuner that's not a Snark...best thing to come along since the advent of the guitar string!

Snarks rule!

I use a Snark at home - it's great - but the Boss TU3 in my pedal board is the only pedal I wouldn't gig without!
