I love how they look

The sparking tone

And how they feel.

I've owned Gibsons, Gretsches and even Rickenbacker 6 string guitars. Now I own four Fenders, a Rickenbacker 12 String electric (which has the most sparking tone of all) and an acoustic.

I love Fender Guitars and my heart still skips a beat when I go into a shop and see them hanging on the wall. I want to buy more Guitars but in all likelihood they will be Fender AVRIs and hopefully Custom Shop Guitars. :)

I bought my first P-Bass because Fender was all I knew in terms of quality beyond Yamaha. Since then, I have been hooked.

I have tried to get away from Fender but I keep coming back: they just work (mine do at least!) with no fuss and superficial stuff. There are more glamorous instruments available, with better niche sounds though nothing beats a Fender in the 80/20 approach to getting things done.

I am a (quality) jeans-and-tshirt kind of guy and Fender suits that approach well.

There are two moments in time that drew me Fender.

Back in the '80s I played a Peavey T-26 (Strat-like guitar), but I was a fan of Andy Summers and loved his Telecaster. In '89 I found a MIJ '62 Telecaster Custom that I loved. This became my favorite guitar, but that's not the nail in the coffin for me.

In '93, I bought a stripped to the wood and amber brown stained '87 Strat Plus. It was at this time that I saw the light. This guitar was amazing! The tone, the look and the quality. I was hooked. I got sucked into Fender like a black whole.

I almost forgot, there was one other thing that sold me on Fender: I've owned several Gibson guitars and they have all sat in the case and eventually sold to but other Fender guitars.

I was an early 50"s rock'n'roll fan, and 60's surfer fan as well. It seemed most all these guys played Fender. We had a very good high school band that often played in Boulder, Colo. near the university along with the popular surf band "The Astronauts". They all had new white Jaguars. That's all it took for me, nothing came close to those in my eye! It seemed Fender was a rock guitar, Gibson was country western, all other brands were far and few in between and considered an oddity. So Fender was what made the impression on me.

From following this thread, I think we can divide people into two main groups that most fall into:
Those who started playing a Fender because of an artist.
Those who started playing a Fender because of the instrument.

... and a few that started playing a Fender for the same reason they kissed Betty in sixth grade - it was what was available.
