When I was a teen, a local music store had lots of Fenders on display, and I used to check them out. That was the seed that started it. Forty five years later I bought my first Strat. I'm kind of slow. :)

I walked away from playing back in the early 90s. At the time I was a Les Paul man. Owned I rather nice one in white that would absolutely scream. Until 2007 I didn't really play very much but had gotten more into the classic country sounds of the old greats that I had listened to in my younger years when working for all my neighboring farmers. I knew Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and this new guy named Brad played Telecasters. On an off chance I was at a music store one day listening to a co-workers kid's band do their first show and picked up the only Telecaster in the place. It felt so right in my hands, I bought it that day and still have the ugly maroon thing, I wish it was a nicer color. While I do still like my newer Epi LP, I prefer that Twangcaster, and play it the most. I plan on getting a Nashville Tele next, then maybe a P Bass after that.

Once I have a second Tele in the stable I plan on swapping the body of my MIM Tele, and might upgrade the pups.

Rediscovering Surf (1st, 2nd, and 3rd or whatever Generations), Spaghetti Western, and Spy.

I would have gotten a Jaguar if I could afford it, but the Stratocaster was an acceptable all-round single coil pup instrument. I started with a Squier Bullet Strat, but upgraded to a Fender MIM Standard Strat (Arctic White with Maple fretboard, I call it "Marilyn") a year or two later. (I still keep the Epi Les Paul on the side though, it came later.)

The Mustang I v2 is the first amp with a speaker that I've owned since I sold my blackface Princeton Reverb, over 40 years ago.

I was never really influenced by who played what. Even in my early electric years, I realized that guys like Clapton and Jeff Beck who are known for Strats also played LP's and such. Even Hendrix played a Flying V at one time. I never really bought a guitar just because "so and so" played one...even as a cover musician, I was always more interested in creating my own sound in any case.

For myself, I think it was really mostly about the "feel" and comfort of a Strat/Strat style guitar. My first electric was an SG knock-off (which got traded rather quickly) and I had a couple of LP knock-offs and I even noodled around on a couple of semi-hollows (ala 335's) in the early years and those were never really "comfortable" for me to play....still aren't. My first "Strat" was actually an old Kramer...which I still have...and later as my ear became a bit more articulate and I realized the Kramer's sound was a bit heavier than I really wanted, I moved more to (more or less) traditional Strats. In the mid 90's when I started looking for a guitar that was a bit more "professional", I must have played dozens of different guitars at various shops before I finally got a '96 MIM Standard....which among the 30'ish guitars I currently own, is still my singular favorite (although she's been pretty heavily modded over the years).

After more than 30 years of playing, I really do love most guitars (except LP's and Teles)...when it comes to electrics, I would love to get a decent Rick someday (particularly a 12 string) and old Dano's/Silvertone's have a unique cool factor that I can appreciate. I'd even like to get a Gretsch someday for the occasional Rock-abilly stuff I do (those White Falcon's are just soooooo beautiful) and at this point I do kind of enjoy a decent Gibson Explorer from time to time...as long as I don't have to stand with it on stage for too long (heavy!). I'd also love to get one of those Schector C-1 Classics with that "Vine of Life" inlay on the neck...again very cool instruments. At the end of the day as a guitar player though I'm happy with my Strats...particularly my mid-90's Latinas (MIM's) and my mid-80's Geishas (MIJ's)...they have the feel, weight, size, balance, sound, versatility, etc., that I really prefer.

Now as far as amps go, I got my old Bandmaster because it was CHEAP (as in inexpensive). Got her in the mid-80's for a whopping $75 back when most players wouldn't touch CBS Fender gear with a stick. At the time I was playing in my first garage band(s) and really needed something louder than my old Spectra 80 practice amp so I could hear myself over the drummer...the Bandmaster was pretty much all I could afford at the time. Same kind of goes for my Princeton 112+....great little amp, but I didn't get it because it was "Fender" as much as it was only $70. Sounded decent enough, loud enough to use for jams (I've even used it for a show or two), easy on the back and affordable. That said, my preferred amp for gigs is my Lab L5...which I got at a guitar show for $40. It's tremendously versatile, reliable and it's the loudest 100 watts I've EVER heard...it just crushes comparable Marshalls (ala Valvestates) right where they stand. I also use my Bugera for smaller gigs...really great sounding amp, but at 22 watts, it's not really loud enough for larger shows (at least the clean channel isn't). For basic practice these days I actually use a little Roland Microcube...it's small, it can run off AAA batteries (great for taking to the park or riverside) and surprisingly it sounds pretty decent...I can even plug an mp3 player into it for practice. Great little amp to keep next to my desk up here and I've even used it on a couple of recent recordings.

With that, if I could only have -1- amp (Gods forbid, LOL!), it would have to be either my L5 or a Roland JC-120...I just LOVE the sound of those old JC's. I do like Fender Twins as well, but like my Bandmaster, they're kind of a "one trick pony" as most Fender or Marshall amps tend to be, where as the L5's and the JC's are considerably more versatile. With the wide range of material I play and particularly since I started playing guitar synth, I really need that flexibility.

Just my usual $.02...

Years ago, well before I decided to play, I always loved the look of the Fender Strat. No matter what I saw there was always a Fender Strat and the people I liked most were the ones who played it.

Then when fine day after hearing John Fogerty playing "Rambunctious Boy" he was interviewed and was asked what he liked about the Fender? He said "I have a lot of them but what makes Fenders unique is the way you can make them snarl...

I liked that and remembered I heard the same kind of comment from the lead guitar player for Elvis!

As for the amp, I bought a Fender guitar so I thought why not buy an amp from the same company? Maybe not the most sophisticated way to do it but I've been very pleased with the results. Oh and Miami Mike makes a good point and that doesn't happen often! :D

That's funny, because my least favourite "feature" of the Strat and Strat-shaped objects is the sharp corners on the bridge. I often wish for something like the "ash tray" bridge covers that used to be a standard accessory, but one that doesn't interfere with palm muting.

AND, what were they thinking, putting the Volume knob half an inch below the bridge pickup?

What made me want to play Fender?

A: Realizing that so many of the sounds I love were made by Fender guitars and amps.

A2: Plugging in and playing one for the first time. MIA Strat into a SuperChamp X2 amp. Ended up taking BOTH home that day.

Then I discovered the joy that is/are the Blues Deluxe and Super Sonic 60 amps.

I finally realized that just about all the other amps I lust after: Peavey Classic series, Tone King Falcon, Imperial, Sky King, Metropolitan, et al Appeal to me because they sound like a Fender amp- albeit with a twist or two.

Thus, in a nutshell- because they make "my sound"- the tone I want.

I was 15 in '65 (may you all live as long), sharing lessons at music store, waiting for mom to pick us up Saturday mornings. We'd drool over stuff far beyond our budget. My fave drool was twin reverb amps (they had Super Beatles etc there, but the twin....). Every thing just looked so.... perfect.
Buddy Holly first ref to a strat, but when Hendrix popped up: that was it. I recall moment first heard, in friend's 55 chevy convertible radio at lunch time in lot of convenience store (cut out from high school) : WHAT IS THAT? Music changed forever....

You might want to consider a strat fitted wth a Bigsby.

Glad to see the Gilmour love in here. For me, it was Gilmour/SRV. Plus, they look cool and feel good to play. And not too heavy.
Many reasons, I guess. They're just my favorite.
