Well,guys,...I'm not really sure exactly where to begin, but I am at a point where I have to make a decision on what I am going to do musically. As most of you know,I fell on the job just a little over four to five months ago which resulted in a left wrist that was broken in two places. This required surgery to repair and also required a metal implant that is PROBABLY going to be with me the rest of my life according to the orthopedic surgeon that done
the surgery on my wrist. Due to that metal implant(titanium plate and seven screws)and where it is placed at in my hand,it is causing me to have limited range of motion,...even though I did go through physical therapy,...and unfortunately now makes trying to play guitar very difficult for me.

This has brought me to the point where I don't feel I can continue with guitar, and out of necessity, move to a keyboard instrument,(..forget piano,...it doesn't interest me at all,...)where it does not require you to bend the wrist much at all to play unlike guitar. I am looking at selling my instrument and two tube amps to finance purchase either a vintage Hammond A-100 series organ(no Leslie),or a much newer single manual organ keyboard such as a Hammond XK-1c that has an on board Leslie simulator. The key action on either organ will be lighter and easier on my left wrist.

I'm not on here to get anyone to feel sorry for me,...that is CERTAINLY not my intent. The intent is to try and get you to understand how I am seeing things and that although I may have to give up guitar in favor of a keyboard instrument,...I am NOT giving up on music. Yes,...I'm going to hate seeing the Strat go along with the HRD III amp and especially the '59 Bassman LTD Vintage Reissue amp. I REFUSE to take a loan out on ANY organ,...vintage Hammond or newer more modern digital model,...so I have no choice but to sell them to finance the purchase of either keyboard. I'll still frequent the Fender site once in a while, though.

If it aint' broke,...don't fix it! I like to keep my amps and guitars factory original,...no mods necessary,...don't want them,...don't need them!

My gear as of now;
Standard Strat
Hot Rod Deluxe III amp
Champion 20 amp
'59 Bassman LTD Reissue

Sorry to hear about your injury but I salute you for keeping the fire alive and wanting to play on. I'm the opposite, a keyboard player who picked up guitar a few years ago. But my bread and butter playing out is still organ and piano. I've been playing a Wurlitzer Electronic Piano (circa 1970) forever but it came time to get something more reliable and being as I love the Hammond tone, I found myself needing a new Hammond SK1, which has an amazing Leslie emulator with great controls (you can set the position of the virtual mic to get different tones) and the ability to get everything from a church organ to a jazzy Hammond, to a bluesy Booker T tone, to an overdriven Jon Lord sound and everything in between.

In looking for the best deal, I found that Music Go Round offers factory refurbished Hammond SK1s for half off the list price WITH a warranty. So needless to say I went the route (cost was about $1,500 vs. about $3K for a new one). I also bought an authentic Hammond gig bag to keep it safe in transit and a "Z" style keyboard stand to make sure it doesn't go flying when some excited fan jumps on stage.

I ended up lining up velcro on the bottom of the keyboard with the top of the stand to also make sure it doesn't get knocked off.

Anyway, if you're going to get a Hammond, I suggest you check out the prices at Music Go Round for a refurbished model:

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I also play keyboards and I would suggest you first get a chord book
with pictures and try some of the chord positions on a flat surface to
see if you'll have any pain in playing them. There are many inversions
that you can use for many chords, but some of them do involve some
stretching in the wrist area (not all) - if you can form the chord positions
without pain, then go for it. You can also get some very decent sounds out
of the mini keyboards. Good luck!

Have you considered switching to playing guitar classical style, i.e. with a stiff wrist? Or a lap steel?
Sure, playing keyboards is good, and I wish you the best of luck with that, but don't give up guitar entirely!

I've been playing piano since 2004, I've no real interest in Organ, so our interests are in contrast to one another.

if you haven't found out yet, you'll quickly see that you can bring a lot of the fundamentals of theory with you.

Chords, inversions, intervals,, all that stuff transcends.

The one challenge that took me quite a while to overcome and master is left hand/right hand independence.

On guitar, your hands are always working together, in tandem. On the keyboard, they still do, but, it's quite different, at least I know it took me a lot of patience and practice to get my left hand to not follow my right.

perhaps with your focus being Organ, it wont be quite as noticeable.

My interest in Piano involved classical pieces, where both hands are often times, doing two completely different things.

But anyway,, good luck in the endeavors, hope that at some point, you'll be able to pickup guitar again.

I don't know if I could just go cold turkey like this..

Hi Dewey, hope you're feeling better. Picking keyboards to broaden your musical horizon is super cool. John Paul Jones comes to mind. Guitar takes a lifetime to get good at. Some of the greatest guitarists didn't make it out of their 20's and so their musical gifts to us listeners just barely scratched the surface of their potential. If you only have one part of one finger left on the injured hand, please keep playing. You won't regret that effort. Feel better Bro, play some music. :D

Since reading this forum, there were a few guys giving up guitar and after a while returning to it and missing their old guitar that they got rid off.
I think you shouldn't sell you guitar, maybe one of the amps to help you a bit financially but(sorry for the GC plug) guitar center has a 12-18 months no interest financing that takes off a bit of pressure on paying off your new keyboard.
5 months doesn't seem to be a long time to recover from a major surgery, I definitely think you should continue physical therapy, just don't give up.
I've read your previous posts and I think just really bummed that you still can't play guitar.
Don't give up man, keep your guitar and in the meantime you can become a kick-ass keyboard player.
Cheers

I can sympathize with you, I broke both my wrists back in 1994. I wasn't playing guitar back then, but even after the physical therapy, it took about 2 years before everything felt normal again. Maybe you just have to give it time. I was determined to not be handicapped by my injuries, so I did a lot of weight lifting with my arms and wrists to regain my motion. I must add though, that I don't have any metal implants. Best of luck with your recovery.
