Randy died on this date (January 1997) while successfully rescuing his son from a strong tide in Hawaii.
In my opinion, he was a unique talent, a guy who played from the heart and found something on the guitar that was all his own. When I need inspiration, I often turn to Randy's music.

I listen to, and play Randy's music from Spirit all the time. He really was a special person as well. Thanks for remembering Randy for us all.

Thanks for the reminder, Growing up in Lahaina ( Maui) in the 70's I got to see Randy a lot in a small bar called the Maui Belle ( which latter became Le Tut's, <Spelling and is now a ABC store I think, right next to the Queen Theater). Loud, packed with people. I had been getting in there from the time I was 15 or 16, remember the drinking laws was 18 then. Surf all day and then go out to the bars.. Maui was pretty wild back then. Loved his music, was that his Dad on drums... Good times ,a little blury in my memory. Made me very nostalgic... RIP Randy... Mark

Spirit is way cool. From what I remember they did not get much air time in the 70s. Randy was asked by Jimi Hendrix to go to England with him from what I've read.

His parents didn't allow him to go, saying at the time, he was to young.
