Find someone to jam with, for fun as well as learning.

You can go to www.ultimate-guitar.com or www.youtube.com . Both sites have courses that are free which will help you with your playing. Good luck.

Thank you one and all for the great information and the links to some good sites. I'll take your advice too, but an acoustic guitar? Can you even set an acoustic next to a Fat Strat and expect it to still play?

Man, I don't know about that one...

Here on Fender's site, there are a few tips and words of encouragement.
http://www2.fender.com/experience/tech-talk/10-faq-learning-guitar/

If you're feeling brave, wander over to ...ahem... another site, and check out some of the lessons there.
http://www2.gibson.com/Lessons.aspx

The reason I highlight the Gibson site is that it's generally a well-respected source and the lessons are also generally sound (no pun intended). The first rule of venturing into any online or digitally distributed lessons today should be to "consider the source". If you don't have a good reason to believe in the expert qualifications of the teacher, move on until you find someone respectable.

Ask Neil Young that question. Or David Bowie.

Every guitar player should at least give an acoustic a shot. You might get hooked though! I play my acoustic just as much as I play my electrics.

Hey, I called Neil Young and David Bowie and not a one of them answered my call... I do get your point however, first I'll lean to play a little. Common knowledge says a properly set up electric is easier to play than an acoustic and I had mine professionally set up and its sweet!

The other thing I like about the electric is I can practice and play on it without making a lot of noise and I really like that. I also found out that a lot of you guys practice that way!

Thanks guys,

Harry

PS. Please have Neil Young and David Bowie call me, I'd love to talk to them! :D

I've come to think of my acoustic as a "different" instrument than my electric. I've taken to open tunings on it, and do much more fingerstyle stuff there than I do on electric.

Use whatever makes sense to you!

Try out a few different genres too. I went through phases playing '60s Rock, then Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Surf, and now some jamming with New Wave and Alternative/Indie bands on my iPod.
Getting excited about a new genre made it more interesting to keep picking up the guitar.
I may try a bit of Slack-key stuff again, on my Strat. It's very . . . relaxing.

Man oh man - oh man,

Not only do I need to get an acoustic guitar which should be enough in and of itself... Now I have to play all different genres as well?

All I need now is for you guys to tell me I need to sing along as well. You know something, my wife deserves that! :P

I can't even talk and play at the same time!

Hi Harry,

Have a look at www.justinguitar.com, he has lots of free lessons and has video lessons that teach you how to play songs.

Also have a look on Amazon and get some song books from bands you like and try to play along, just remember not to get too over optimistic you may be able to strum along with some Beatles songs, but something like Hendrix may be too advanced.

A good teacher will be able to show you how to play the songs that you want to play and will know some songs that you can play.

At the end of the day what do you want to do, work on technique or play songs? The Gibson course will give you the technique, but there is nothing wrong with learning some songs at the same time.

Good luck and keep at it

Ian

Yes "keep at it", a truer statement was never spoken and its true of more than a guitar isn't it!!! I need to remember that everything I learn goes to where I want to be. It all goes to the learning process and I can do that...

Justin looks good, thanks!
