Quick non-Fender question: A friend of mine never changes his strings and it seems to be the cause of some bluing on the P-90 cover on an LP I got as a gift (see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=83069 on the story about how I got it). Anyway, as you can see in the photo, there's some bluing in the pickup cover. Any ideas on how to get rid of it or should I just accept it as "natural" relicing?

Are you sure it is caused by the strings? You might try a very small amount of 409 on a cloth. Should take it off.

You're right. Maybe he used a blue pick...

I'll try a spot of 409 and report back.

Thanks!

I'd be more concerned about the curly hair (it looks like a curly hair) in the vicinity of the lower strings.
Is it the proof of deviant practices that might be causing the blue colouration?

No worries, I had it sanitized before taking possession. That curly is short, but it's not a "short and curly..." You see, that's one off the top of my own nod. Me hair is a bit short on top... 8)

Looks like verdigris from sweat and skin oils to me.

Hmmmm. Learn a new word every day. Had to look that one up!

That might very well be what it is. Asked my buddy if he used a blue pick and he said no.

Tried some 409 on it and didn't get rid of it. Might have to leave it as is. It adds character.

Next thing you know, you might be seeing bluing on pickup covers on the new relics...

A fine example of natural relicing in its early stages, IMHO.

If you absolutely have to do something about it, new covers won't cost you an arm and a leg...

Does he use coated strings? if the 409 didn't work, it could be some sort of solvent based stuff. You could try a little WD-40. That stuff gets out all kinds of stuff. Put it on a rag, or better yet a Q-Tip, don't spray it on the guitar itself.

Thanks all. As I think about it, I'm more and more inclined to go with the natural relicing in its early stages. And as jmattis says, I can always change the pickup cover if needed. Cheers!
