Picks... they are interesting things... just got some Dunlop Jazz III's.
They're awesome :)

They've been around for a long time but, I've only now discovered these little buggers. My picking technique is solid but... Decided to make it better... get it faster.
So.... I've been working on my picking... want to step it up a few notches.

What I noticed is that regular size picks... are a bit "clumsy" when you start getting into fast picking applications. As I'm gaining more speed in my technique.... It's become super annoying how the bigger, rounder end of the pick likes to move around.... making it extra work to control. Distracting at times... and definitely not the most "Ergonomic" type of thing. Decided to do some research in the pick dept... Fell upon some info about the Jazz III picks.

Seems a lot of folks are using them... Bonamassa... Hammet... Petrucci... Johnson... Figured, why not try them out and see for myself. Went to my local music store and got the Ultex Jazz III picks.

Well, these Jazz III's are perfect. Much more comfortable than the small oval shaped Mandolin picks IMO... I've tried those and found them difficult to control... they like to move around. These stay put. The shape hugs your fingers... very comfortable... and they sound good as well.... clear and articulate.

Wanted to give a shout out about them... You may want to try these out. They kick $@! 8)

If you like the Jazz III, then check out the Dava version with the soft grip area. My teacher used Jazz III's for years until I gave him a Dava, then he switched. Very comfortable, yet accurate.
I find there is a pick for all needs. I sometimes use two or three different picks during the course of a set.

I have started using Snarling Dog Brains picks. They are easier to control because they have a rough surface where you grip them, yet they fell comfortable.

The Dava picks appear to be well liked by a lot of folks... Doesn't Johnny Hiland use those?
Not familiar with the Snarling Dog picks...

One of the things I like a lot about these Jazz III's... since there is no grip surface area to h the pick... you can easily go between using both the "sharp" tip and... roll them over to the side and you also get to use the softer edge. I do like that. I go between those two edges like I used to do with standard sized picks. You get two different attacks... the point is very clear and defined... the rounder edge gives more warmth. Adds a lot into the dynamic and tonal applications you can pop off with the pick...

My favourites these days are 0.73 mm and 1.0 mm Dunlop Ultex Standard picks.
My only problem with them is that they are hard to find on my living room carpet. :?

Also, my sister and brother-in-law have given me some souvenir picks from their travels, and oddly enough, they don't suck. The transparent kinda' stubby one with the New Brunswick flag in it is another of my favourites, especially for heavier string gauges.

I started using Jazz III's about 3 years ago and haven't looked back. Not only are they awesome picks and handle very nicely, but it also precludes other guitarists that are used to using "normal" size picks from borrowing picks from you and not returning them!! Quite a bargain I'd say!! ;)

Too bad most cards are too thin for me, but I love the sign.

wiki: "A plectrum (pick) for electric guitars, acoustic guitars, bass guitars and mandolins is typically a thin piece of plastic or other material shaped like a pointed teardrop or triangle. The size, shape and width may vary considerably. Thin items such as small coins, bread clips or broken compact discs and credit cards can be used as substitute plectra. Banjo and guitar players may wear a metal or plastic thumb pick mounted on a ring, and bluegrass banjo players often wear metal or plastic fingerpicks on their fingertips. Guitarists also use fingerpicks."

I looked that up because I wasn't certain what Plecktrum was.
I have posted before that I use Starpick's, yellow for bass guitar orange for guitar. However, I used V-picks before being introduced to Starpick's and have been using them again. V-picks are easy to use, come in various sizes shapes and thickness and alter sound in a good way as if you are finger picking. A warm sound even if you strike the string hard. A remarkable difference I should say.

For me, the main function is cheap advertising - handing out plectris.

That I use something completely different is beside the point :)

I just realized I had some of those "Brain" picks. I thought they were generically called "Cat's Tongue" picks, but that might be someone else's brand name for them. The grippy texture is nice, but I still like the feel of the polyetherimide that the Ultex uses better than nylon. I'm not quite sure what it is.
I might have to look for some of the JD Ultex Jazz IIIs, just for the shape.

The "Ultex" picks do sound good.

I found I like the "Ultex" Jazz III's on my Straight Up SSS config Strat... very similar to the Tort-Shell style Fender picks in tone... You get that "Crisp, Clean, Refreshing" type of sound :D

I've been using the X-Tra Hvy "Grippo" type Jazz III's with my HSH config Strat... warmer... but punchy... those give a deeper, more heavy type of tone

Honestly? I used Fender mediums for a long time but these days...truth be told almost all of my guitar picks say either "Guitar Center" or "Sam Ash" on the side, LOL!!! Any time I walk in, I just grab a couple out of the fishbowl...they seem to work just fine :-)
