I was in a band that opened for BJ Thomas back in the
early 80s and I always loved the way his band did this
intro with the electric sitar:

For something a little different, it's this:

What say you?

Probably my favorite:
Foreplay -------> Longtime - Boston

Second would be, of course:
Space Intro ------> Fly Like an Eagle - Steve Miller

A longtime favorite of mine is that delicate piano, bass, and guitar interplay that opens "Monkey Man" from the Rolling Stones Let It Bleed album, I used to listen to it over and over. The song that followed didn't deserve such a great intro, IMHO :D .

In a slightly different vein, hearing the throbbing drums, percussive piano, and soaring strings that open the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart Of Mine" still gets my toe tapping, yeah.

The synth riff intro to Head East's "Never Been Any Reason" always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

Close on its heels for the number two slot is shimmilou's first choice.

In both cases though, these passages must be heard via a credible playback system at *supercharged* volume levels.

Arjay

My vote would be for the most hardest, most heaviest, and most legendary metal song intro....

Number one has to be the intro to Layla! And just as Arjay's selection of Head East's synth intro Never Been Any Reason, must always be cranked! I do like some Head East and always thought they were a little under appreciated!

Favorite - the intro to Wheels of Confusion, by Black Sabbath. The eeriness and mournfulness are perfect lead-ins to the main body of the song, and for that matter, to the rest of the album.

Second favorite - the intro to I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home) by Grand Funk Railroad.

Melody Lee by the Damned. I love the piano melody and then the dynamics as the band comes in.

Alvin Lee's blistering playing on the intro of "Going Home"
from either the album or Woodstock soundtrack.
