Maggie is a speaker cabinet. It developed from an amp Dave Hunter designed for his book. The cab has an 8'' and 10'' speaker. The cab is built for the Maggie amp but, I wanted the cab only, so Weber did not include the cut-out and and a speaker jack in.

I currently have an Emi 10'' Red Fang and an Emi 8" hemp cone speaker (820H) in it and the blend has a rich mix of tones. The 820H is 96 db and the RF is 102db, somehow the mix came out well. The nasal honk of the 8" is not as present, putting those mids and highs in there without dominating. The hemp cone also mellows but richens those tones. The RF is brit voiced alnico 10" that has good chime and bottom, as well as bite.

I had the 10" Lil Buddy, (hemp) with a Weber Sig8S alnico and it sounded dead and disconnected. So far I only have two 8' speakers to play with and the Weber sounds great as a stand alone and the unspectacular 820H finds some use.

Wiring is interesting. The RF is 8 ohms and the 820H is 4, so I wired them in series for a 12 ohm cab. My H&K likes 8-16 ohms. My SCX2 prefers the higher ohmage since 4 ohms is not a strength of this amp. The HRDlll loves it. The sound of a 12'', 10'' and 8'' all voicing the same guitar input/output in different ways was a treat for my ears. The intermix of speakers worked incredibly well to my ears. I look forward to more experimenting as funds allow new speakers to become available. I hope Weber will start making hemp cones for its 8'' speakers. I will buy no more paper cones for awhile.

Here are front and back pics. I am a poor photographer. The tolex is Green Croc.

Sounds like a very cool combination of speakers. 8)

It is amazing how combining different types of speakers can add a depth to the sound. I have a 4x12 with selectable 2 Texas Heats or 2 Red, White and Blues, or all 4, installed in an X pattern, and although each type has it's own good sound, the 4 together have this amazing "3D" kind of sound.

As you also noted, my cab sounds best using a 16 ohm amp setting with all four speakers being 8 ohms, and the mismatched impedance sounds much better than the matched.

Speaker pairings have been something I started playing with about two years ago. Of course, having a few good speakers around is kinda helpful. So, speakers and cabs have become a hobby I have decided to pursue and devote some discretionary income towards.

As for the 3-D type of sound, I agree. Not only do you get separate voicings but, those voicings then find unique harmonic blends that would not exist without the two speakers contributing their own discreet overtones. Pairing are not as obvious as they seem either. What seems like a good concept can sound dull. Like my Lil Buddy and Weber Sig8S. Both sound better alone than in combination. The rather utilitarian Emi 820H sounds great with the Red Fang, despite a db spread of 96 for the 8" and 102 for the 10". SO, that is where some of the fun is. Finding out which speakers produce that "3-D" sound is never a formula. Cabs play their own part. So far, I am partial to open backs. I like the airiness. It complements the alnico's own kind of je ne sais quoi.

Thanks for the reply. Cabs must be a dull topic.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
