Given the looks of it I was really hoping they'd have gone with Roadworn necks for these.

I particularly liked the v-neck on the first generation Road Worn 50's Stratocaster.

Yeah, I like V necks too, but if I want it road worn, I'll drag it after my car myself.

Well, the Classic 50's neck would make me perfectly happy, too. However, I was more getting at the overall look of the instrument. It has a warn look. So I think the roadworn neck might match the look of the sandblasted body better as a whole.

I'm sure most have seen this, but it's from the CS fb page. http://www.fendercustomshop.com/features/2015-custom-collection/

My thoughts...

The Journeyman Relic is just another relic tier. So nothing to write home about, but options are good and if Relics are your bag then this is just another way to go.

Basses.

1960 J. Very nice. J's are usually treated well, and the Journeyman and the Geddy are both evidence of that.

Precision basses. Nice to see The Custom Shop get back to real Single Coil Precisions with this year's 55. The "stacked" coil has been the thing lately and personally I think this should simply be a choice on the build sheet, and nothing more. This 55 Precision bass is pretty sweet. If you ever wanted a Bill Black P bass, this would be the one I'd imagine. If it had a C instead of a V neck I'd probably be in the market. The Journeyman Relic 59 is very nice. I played one of the previous "Custom Shop 60's P" models with the 60's Oval C neck profile and I suspect it's probably the most comfortable of all necks I've ever played. I think we'll see it used much more in the future. It's really nice that they included it here. My only beef is that we got two P bass models and we only got one Blonde and two Sunburst finishes. I think we need a little more adventure in the bass finish dept. outside of the Masterbuilt level instruments. Other than that pretty sweet.

Guitars. I'm primarily a bassist so I don't spend much time on them, but the Tele Caballo Tono makes me wish I could justify a guitar purchase at the CS level. That would definitely be my go to axe.

All in all a nice offering, in my opinion.

I know of at least two forum members attending the show and
hope that they get some good pics for us.

Doesn't look like Fender is introducing a new 12-string at NAMM.

Nor a 30th anniversary Fender Katana. :(

Fender appears to be even more Strat-focused than before, with even fewer new non-Strat models. Even the Telecaster seems to have been demoted from a near-equivalent top model to a niche like Jazzmaster and Mustang.
I've noticed this in advertising too - where Fender often depicted two guitars, one Strat and one Tele, when they now depict two guitars, they're likely to both be Strats.

The color choices also appear to have taken a hit. Grey was the color of the year in 2012, and now appears to be color of the year in Fender. A tad late...

The good thing? Well, there are a couple of affordable lacquer models, and the sandblasted thingy doesn't look all bad. And if you have a fetish for buying things that look haggard and dinged, you have even more choices than before, including Mexican ones.

Demand side economics, bro. They go where the action is. That's 'cuz ';vintage types' like us don't necessarily rock on sizzling humbuckers, locking trems, and guitars which are reminicscent of our ex-wives and their mothers. Say '12 string' to those who do and they reply is .."say 'whut'!?!"

We had some discussion on that guitar awhile back. A luthier formerly with the company did a knock-off of that model with a redsigned headstock which was killer. Perhaps he now holds a trademark on the re-design. Too bad. I'd buy one for sure, but not with the old headstock.

I would take one even with the old ugly arrow headstock, but an official Fender Katana with a Tele style or snake head headstock? Take my money! I'd even dig out the old leather pants and hydrogen peroxide...

His headstock design followed the look of the upper horn of the guitar. Something that even Fender should have had the 'eye' to do years ago. IMHO, it was definitely a keeper. As for the peroxide, that was over 50 years ago. It gave my hair a burnished red highlight. Those were my lifeguard days and my mother thought it was due to the sun. It was, in part. 8)

Looks like your 'sandblasted natural finish' is going to have to be a Custom Shop order.

So does the introduction of a MIM Dave Murray Strat with his "modern" setup (SD Hot Rails and Floyd Rose Trem) mark the end of the USA Dave Murray Signature Strat at twice the street price?

And seriously?... a compound radius but only 21 frets?

As soon as Brad brings the products section forward, you'll have your answer.
