I wasn't too impressed with the limited edition artist models I saw. I'm sure someone will like them, but that's just cosmetic changes.

But I wonder what the "post modern" models will be like. Will it truly be a postmodern design with hard angles, circles and ornamentation that takes up substantial space? Half-cylinder pickups or a barrel shaped whammy bar? I doubt it.
So I'm curious to what Fender means by "post modern".

I'm interested on what the low down is with this "Journeyman" series. I'm thinking it's likely akin to a relic'd version of the Vintage Hot Rod line at the CS level. Probably nothing I'd take the plunge on, but I'm still interested to see what it's all about. Not sure what to make of the "Post Modern" monicker, either.

Drawing from the concept underlying the word, what more could it be than a 'nuts and bolt' axe that a professional musician could depend upon 24/7 to do the job. There's more than a few of those in the stable already. Remains to be seen. It's hard to improve on a classic, as your never-ending search continues to prove.

I'd think the nuts and bolts Precision Bass that a pro musician can depend on would be covered by any of the P basses put out by either the CS or the regular factory. It's hard to get more dependable than a simple Precision bass. I think we might see those "common mods" that often find their way into the Vintage Hot Rod line. Something along the lines of a 59 Precision with modern frets, a high mass bridge and a J bass pick up in the bridge position. Perhaps this will just replace the old (Pro/Proto) line which usually featured NOS features and replace it with a relic'd feeling instrument.

Time will tell, though. I find the instruments that try to "reinvent the wheel" too dolled up for my tastes, but this latest batch of Vintage Hot Rod instruments seemed very popular. I know the Precision and Jazz offerings had some surprisingly high end features for factory made runs. While not my cup of tea they were certainly impressive on a lot of levels. Perhaps the CS has decided to lean more that way at the CS level instead of the Proto line which tended to follow a more "Deluxe" series approach to it's builds?

I think it might refer to who they are built by, not for.
Like a new spin on "teambuilt", with a journeyman instead of a master builder overseeing production. It would allow FMIC to churn out "high end" CS models faster and cheaper. But not necessarily the same quality.

Nothing special about that axe, essentially an American Special Strat with AlNiCo V single coils, "grease bucket" circuitry and a sandblasted ash body.

Totally different beast compared to its MIJ/MIM ancestors.

The new model is essentially an eye-catching blend of three different basses: from the new high mass bridge to the white pearloid fingerboard block inlays/pickguard and the classic black finish from the original '72, Geddy's signature crackle and bristle comes through a pair of vintage-style J-Bass single coils specially wound and voiced to sound like those on his favorite old Jazz Bass.

Interesting.... You just might be onto something!

Given the looks of it I was really hoping they'd have gone with Roadworn necks for these. Had the Precision bass model came with a 50's spec factory relic neck I think it would have matched the look perfectly and I would have definitely scooped one up. Cool looking finish, but the Special neck makes it a no-go for me. I hope Fender brings this finish back possibly with more colors down the line at some point. It's pretty cool.

I particularly liked the v-neck on the first generation Road Worn 50's Stratocaster.

Yeah, I like V necks too, but if I want it road worn, I'll drag it after my car myself.

Yep, the Roadworn 50's Precision neck would have made this a must have for me. A great work horse bass. Still, it's a great look and I hope the people who dig them enjoy them.
