While I was in Pearl Harbor recently, I had the pleasure of working with a man who is the great grandson of Manuel Nunes, one of the men credited with inventing the ukelele. After telling me a little a bit about his family and their Portuguese origin, he offered to bring a couple vintage ukeleles into our workspace. After making sure it wouldn't be any trouble, I said I'd be delighted to see them. He brought them in the next day, wrapped in blankets. These two were made by Leonardo Nunes, Manuel's son, circa 1920. Both are made of koa. One belonged to my friend's grandmother and one to his mother. As you can see, the smaller one needs some restoration but they're both very beautiful and otherwise in great condition. I believe both are made from koa wood.

It's a Lanikai Tenor Ukulele, Limited Edition - #172/300.

W/ bookmatched solid Flamed Maple Top, Back, Sides. Unstained, flat Nitro finish. Features a Bound Top, Back and Neck w/ MOP appointments, Indian Rosewood fingerboard & bridge, Aquilla Nylgut strings.

It plays great ! Really good Tone and projects like a Martin ! Stays in tune remarkably well.

cheers!
