I found this guitar locally for sale for $1,000. I feel as it is a fake. It is the aluminum body, 100% chrome. Knobs, pickguard, and pickup covers. The strange part about it is the head stock and neck. It says fender custom shop on the back and has a serial number? I haven't got the serial number from the guy yet and his pictures are terrible. I know the 40th anniversary chrome aluminum body strats had a star emblem on the headstock, also the other chrome bodies produced in 94 had black pick guards with a black headstock. Please help. I would like to know if this is real or fake. I feel like its a fake based on the neck, headstock, tuners, and pickguard.

Given that the question is "fake or real?", I don't know whether to answer "yes" or "no".

Look at the rear plate. The screw holes are equidistant, not offset.
And it has six holes, not a slot like the Al-models I have seen have.
And it's hard to see, but the 12th fret marker seems to be too wide.
And it's 21-fret. To my knowledge, the Al-models should be 22-fret.
And then there's the Custom Shop logo as you said - available online as a waterslide for $5.

Everything about this one screams fake, in my opinion. I wouldn't buy it for $100.

The neck is definitely a fake. The truss rod adjust hole is a dead giveaway, and I can almost make out the twelfth fret dot spacing, looks too wide. But, the hole is enough to know for sure, fake!

Your question; "Fake or Real?", can't be answered with a yes or no, the answers should include fake or real, and the answer would be fake. :(

All the above, plus the subtle hint "I'm moral" picturing a Bible Stories book along with the guitar. The old saying, "religion is a scoundrel's last refuge" might apply here. Where's the serial#.

Well, technically, it can always be answered with a "yes", unless you somehow think it's neither fake nor real... :)

I've figured it was fake because of the headstock. Ther serial number I searched and there was other guitars with the same one. The guitar body was used in 93-94 and the serial number was from an 03. I confronted the guy about it and he honestly had bought it and didn't realize it was a fake but now that I pointed it out he was very disheartened. He's going to take the listing down. He really didn't know it was a fake. I was wondering if there was any way to tell if the body was an actual aluminum one. How would you check? Take off the neck and see if there's dates stamped or?? Any ideas thanks.

1: Place a magnet on it. If the magnet sticks, it's not aluminium. If it doesn't stick, it could or could not be aluminium.
2: Take the rear plate off, exposing the metal below. Run a piece of non-plated steel (like the back of a wood knife) against a hard unlacquered edge on the inside. If there are sparks, it's not aluminium.
3: The test under 2 should also have made the metal you scratched shiny. It should be soft enough that you can scrape it to a metallic luster with a knife, and the luster should turn dullish white within a couple of hours. The thin white corrosion on Aluminium is actually sapphire dust, which protects it from further corrosion.

The chemistry engineer in me would say "drop a bead of mercury on an exposed piece - it it causes the guitar body to turn into a a big white fungus and fall apart, it was aluminium"... :)

I'm not sure about this one but Fender did have an aluminum body Annaversary Strat in 94. http://www.grouseguitars.com.au/sold/fe ... mstrat.htm

I saw one at Sam Ash way back. Nice looking. There aren't many, so I think a grand for a rare guitar is suspicious even before looking at anything else.
