Here's a frustrating thing.
I had been planning to spend an afternoon in a city about an hour away from where I live, just to get away from home for a while. So, naturally, I looked up a music shop online to visit while I was there. One store, who thinks of themselves as "big hitters" in my state had a dream list of guitars in thier online inventory. I picked out at least 7 that I wanted to test out. And yes, I was planning on buying one.
I did some touristy stuff, had lunch, and then went to the store before I hit the road home. I get there, and a guy asks me if I need help while I'm stuck in a sea of Epiphone. I tell him what I'm looking for based off the website, and he says "yeah, our online inventory is 3 years old." Nothing that I went to test was there. I was three years late. I was completely shocked. Yes, I do think I should have called ahead, but what do you all think? Is it a huge mistake in today's world that a business doesn't embrace the internet to draw customers and sell products?

P.S. I bought a Baja Tele from a shop in a different town on my way home.

that is very irritating, they should have updated the site or taken it off the net or something, you should post some pictures of your guitar.

Hello Liveatsix,

I certainly would've been aggravated.
and also would've purchased elsewhere.
I regularly take road trips to distant{well not too distant}
music stores, it's usually a good time.

Cheers.

Yeah, that's really bad. If that would've been me, it would probably be the last time I did business with them.

Oh, I walked out pretty fast. I wouldn't even steal a pick from them.

It sounds like the good 'ol bait 'n switch, if it was intentional-drawing you in for something they don't have, then trying to get you to buy something else. Either that, or they're simply don't care who comes in for what, and don't even have enough respect for themselves to even keep their inventory updated. It's like the old joke about the 'Phone company' (reference 'Laugh-In'), 'We may not be the only phone company in town, but we sure act like it'.

I've been shopping for guitars for 20 years, been through many a dealer that had or still advertises in VG Magazine. I've only kept in contact with ONE, found them about 15 years ago, because they treat the customer right!

Agreeance with all of the above, particularly the "bait-and-switch" comment. As easy as it is to run an online shop in this day and age, there's no excuse for letting a business site sit idle for three years.

You know, "bait and switch" didn't even cross my mind. It could be, since I went there specifically to play what I thought they had. But I think they just got lazy. I'm still angry, and still quite shocked, by the way.

Ya they may have got lazy. It seem a lot of the smaller shops try the internet stuff and just don't pull it off or it was not as they thought it would be. I live about 2 miles from were there is seven musical instrument shops along one road you can walk from one to the other in less then two minutes. One is just starting to get more into net sales after 50 years in bussines and this place has more then 400 guitars on the floor so they may be ok because of staff and stock. Right down the street is another who has 50 years behind them they tried 2 years ago and they are like you descibed but they have small staff and only high end stuff and have not updated site in like forever but still nice store. then there a 3rd. one that 90% of what they do is net sales got it to a sience what they show they got. It's what they put into it and stick with.

If it's online, it better be in the store! So much for having a website and not maintaining it... idiots.

Sorry you had a partially wasted trip, but at least you came home with a guitar. How do you like it?

It will have to grow on me. I'm not the biggest fan of glossy necks. Intonation seems to be a problem with the three barrells so far and I'm afraid to change out the strings from 10's to 9's without neck troubles. I do like it quite a bit, but I'm going to take it in for tweeking early next week. I got a great deal because I traded in about 3/4 of my home rig to get it.
