I have a habit of buying used, like new guitars to add to my collection. Never have I purchased one that has been modified with the buyer aspiring to recoup his outlay for his mods by adding them to the price of the guitar, often asking more then the original purchase price of new. A used guitar is normally worth about half the cost of new, out the door, no matter what the original purchaser thinks his improvements are worth. Just the cost/loss of doing business retail. I guess I'm tried of seeing dreamers on Craigslist with their sloppy, botched modifications thinking the results are now "custom shop".

Many times, mods actually decrease the value, as compared to an all original example.

... and that is precisely why I never do any irreversible mods to my MIA guitars. Pickguards and volume knobs are as far as I will go. Those are easy to revert back to stock. If I want to try something new that requires disturbing a factory solder joint or cutting wires I have less expensive guitars for that ... and a Partsocaster.

YMMV

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Agreed. The mods I've made on my MIM are so good that I doubt I'll ever get rid of it. I certainly wouldn't want to take a loss on it. And I can gig with it as well.

My MIA is bone stock and is quite good as-is. But it's a little too nice to take it out to the places we play...

I don't mind modding a low budget Squier but as far as a MIM Fender standard or anything above that, I would definitely leave it all stock.

I just can't bring myself to mod a nice guitar, I found a 20 year old Harmony "54 Strat" on Ebay for $40.00. I bought it to mod, It looked like it was in bad shape. When it arrived I started taking it apart to clean it up and after I was done cleaning and restringing, it was really nice, completely original, I could not mod it.
