After spending some time with this amp, I've got to say I'm really enjoying it.

I've tried a couple smaller tube amps over the past couple years. A Blues Jr., and Mesa Studio 22. Both of which I couldn't really get into. I like the 6l6 aspect much better.

One thing I'm considering is making a new cabinet for the Superjet. Although I love the look of it, the power tubes are very close to the speaker.

My thought are, maybe if I make a bigger housing, separate the tubes and speaker a little, and give room for a possible bigger reverb tank, it could be a good experiment.

Possibly a quilted Maple with blue anelin dye finish would be a nice elegant way to keep the Ampeg look. It's a fun thought.

Congrats! That's a great deal. A friend, who I used to be in a band with, had an old Ampeg 1x15 combo that kicked behind. And I have a beat-up old SVT 8x10 fridge cab that sounds like God.

Here's the Ampeg SVT fridge at a show (was letting our bassist borrow it, the guitar rig is mine too), dead center of the pic in the backline:

I just ordered some Sylvania JHS 12ax7s for it. Sylvania tubes are insane for these kinds of amps. I have one in the Heidkamp too. Great for Fender amps.

Next will be on to the power tubes. I'm not sure weather to stick with 5881s or go full 6l6. This debate will go on in my head for a bit.

The Ampeg 'Rocket' was a' go to' piece of gear back in the late '50's .

The reason to enjoy the Ampeg sound: the Baxandall tone stack.

Preferred rigs of the late, greats Fender Precision bassists James Jamerson and Donald "Duck" Dunn.
A Fender Bass and this circuit is an amazing match!

“This type of circuit, developed by British designer Peter Baxandall in the early 1950s, was used in hi-fi audio systems. It was different from the Western Electric-inspired circuits used by Fender and Gibson in that its separate tone controls could either boost or cut bass and treble. This arrangement leaves the mid-range frequency response flat, or neutral. By comparison, the Fender and Gibson amps equipped with bass and treble controls were only able to boost those frequencies. As an artifact, the mid-range frequencies were scooped, or cut. Therefore, Ampeg amplifiers had more mid-range response than other makes of amps.”

Posted below has that tone. It is a portable solid state alternative. You can add it to or bypass the eq you are presently using. Good luck finding one.
