I may not be the first to discover this, but while experimenting, I found out that a good working single string sordine (partial mute) can be made by clamping a small lead fishing sink to the string, between the bridge pickup and bridge. It dampens the string output considerably, while not muting it completely.

For a smaller effect that doesn't require retuning, a standard small rubber band can be used - wrap it under the string near the bridge, then through itself, and then back over the bridge, where you fasten it to the string with a couple of half hitches. Useful when a single string sounds shrill.
Another fix for that is to put a tiny piece of paper under the action adjustment screws of the bridge saddle. It will dampen the string a tiny bit.
