I know it's a modeling amp and has plenty of distortion presets, but can I use a distortion pedal with the Mustang ii v2 if I care to. I ordered one and would still like to be able to use a pedal if I care to.

THANKS,
John-Paul

If it's a distortion pedal that does the distortion itself, yes. In particular, most digital distortion pedals should work fine.

What won't work as expected on a SS amp is an overdrive pedal that creates distortion by overdriving the signal. You will stlll get an effect and clipping if pushed hard enough, but it will not be a harmonic break-up, but more like inebriated high voltage bumblebees.

I like the visual here...

A while back, I asked Fender TSL about this...and they replied with a maximum input level of 1.2 Vrms.

fwiw.

Thanks. So basically as long as it's a digital distortion pedal, and not an overdrive pedal I'm good. Any suggestions for a good pedal around $50 or less? I'm basically trying to get a grunge style, dirty sound. I. E. Nirvana, early Foo fighters ()first album () even some heavier stuff like Slipknot? I know this amp is more for classic rock and more of a clean sounding amp. I didn't research enough before I pulled the trigger, but it looks like a great amp. I just want to get a little heavy and dirty, and just wanted to know if it will work and specific model pedals if you guys know of any good ones that will work. Right now, until the Mustang shows up, I'm using a gorilla GG-25 TUBE AMP(almost 30yrs old) ,and I'm a pretty new guitarist.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John-Paul

Since you're a new guitarist and haven't even gotten the Mustang ll yet, I would really encourage you to live with the amp for a while. The Fuse software is pretty good for bedroom practicing and will give you a good feel for adding and subtracting pedals from a preset and hearing what happens. It may not be pro quality, but adding a distortion pedal in front of an amp you don't know how to control is a recipe for noise.

^^^ What he said.

It is a very flexible system, but if you don't know how to wrangle it...you could be frustrated by adding external devices. You could be frustrated without external devices. Check out the Mustang family forum and read up while you wait for delivery...

You can use whatever guitar effect pedal you want in front of any guitar amp you want. Using the loop is a different matter but in front? Have at 'er.

+1 to both these points.

I have a Mustang II v2. I use a couple pedals on the front end only because of the two preset limitation on the footswitch. Just adds flexibility. The amp does a LOT if you take the time to learn it. For instance, the FX Knobs are fully assignable so if you are like me and can’t stand being tethered to Fuse, you can assign the FX you commonly use to the knobs, assign basic amp models to the preset slots and easily add those to any preset with just a turn of the knob.

As for pedals, I didn’t have much luck with the Fuzz pedals I’ve tried but I haven’t given up my search. I have a Joyo Ultimate Drive which I had some Amazon credit and got for dirt cheap. I have to say… the Joyo is amazing with this amp. Grits up a clean preset wonderfully without having to use up a footswitch slot. The other pedal I use is a ProCo Rat. That also works well.

Hope you enjoy the amp. It’s been a lot of fun for me and do checkout the Mustang Forum. Lots of good discussions over there.

my 2 cents

For $50 or less, I would recommend just getting a footswitch for the Mustang AMP, which lets you switch between two presets at a tap. Put distortion on one and not the other.
There are plenty of amp models and built-in overdrive emulation to get you started.

As for your old GG-25, it's not a tube amp despite having a switch saying "Tube Stack". It's all solid state. The Mustang is likely going to be a good step up from that.
