Who do you think are under-rated bassists? My pick would be Mike Dirnt of Green Day. He comes up with cool bass lines and solos that fit perfectly in all of their songs. His bass lines keep the rhythm while having cool riffs in between. He definitely doesn't get a lot of credit compared to his bandmate Billie Joe.

I don't know about under-rated necessarily, but two that I don't see mentioned very often are Larry Taylor and Davey Faragher. Larry Taylor has played with dozens of artists including Tom Waits, Canned Heat, John Mayall, and the Monkees. Davey Faragher was a founding member of "Crack-er" [edit: sorry, the forum doesn't seem to like this word] and has also gone on to play with many other artists as well. Their work is inspiring!

Looking forward to other responses. Cheers.

Tommy "T-Bone" Wolk (may he rest in peace). Played for Daryl Hall and John Oates (Hall and Oates).
He was an absolutely amazing player on ANYTHING with strings, but Bass was his thing when first introduced into the lime light.

Fender even used him in their ad's to promo their Basses.

Died WAY too soon at 58 back in 2010.

I also used to think Craig MacGregor of Foghat was way better than anyone ever gave him credit for.

This is hard. Most of the bassists Ilike I would not consider under-rated. There may be one, however ... and it may be a bit of a reach.

But ... how about Rick Anderson of the Tubes??

Alex 'Dirk Lance' Katunich of Incubus
Especially their first album "Fungus Amongus"...extremely cool and impressive bass riffs (especially for basically a kid at the time).

P.S.- Yes, I felt like it wouldn't hurt to wake this thread up.

I'll begin by saying almost ALL bassists are under-rated!

I'll throw Patrick O'Hearn's name in the hat. Primarily known for Missing Persons, but also played along with the likes of Mark Isham and Frank Zappa.

A couple that I'd like to mention are Pete Quaife of The Kinks and Charlie Tumahai of Be Bop Deluxe both sadly no longer with us.

i'll answer with a caveat- only under-rated to those who haven't heard of her. my answer is carol kaye. as part of the wrecking crew, she played on more hits than I can remember. it was she who came up with the great bass line on "the beat goes on". major, major talent.

The most under-rated Bassist I know is a 'Bayou Boy' from Louisiana named Corey Duplechin.

We try and catch him and Tab Benoit whenever we're in New Orleans. Really nice guy !

They've been playing together for years, along with other locals like Sonny Landreth. They're semi-regulars at the Rock n Bowl !

Corey is actually play Sax by training and just picked up the Bass on the side (probably lending Truth to the saying:'The Guitar Player gets the Girls, but Bass Players get the Work...'. Because of this, He approaches it as a melodic instrument.

Enjoy !!

cheers !
