The Vox VT Series amps are deadly for emulating the authentic tube amp sound due to a 12AX7 tube in the power amp section, not the pre amp section as some reviews state. This innovation is what allows for an even more realistic overdrive tone as well as a warmer clean tone than most SS amps have.

How do they bias a 12AX7 in a power amp?

According to the manual for my AD60VTX, the 12AX7 tube is in the preamp section.

So, I reread the manual, and it appears I was wrong and Guitslinger was right, that the 12AX7 tube is in the poweramp section. When I have time later I'll scan the sheet and post it, if anyone is interested. I had just glanced over this section when I got the amp and never let it sink into my brain exactly what it said. I think the confusion comes from the fact that the 12AX7 is normally a preamp tube.

Hi Drew,as I said that a lot of reviews, even from reputable magazines have stated that the 12AX7 is in the preamp,a lot of people are mislead into thinking that's the case. Vox explained the method to their madness several years ago before they had to shut down their forum because of a proliferation of spammers. They explained that with a clean S.S. tone going into the power amp the tube driven section wasn't coloured by having to go through a power amp ,hence the listener got a much more natural tube amp sound since the section with the tube amp was the last one in the signal chain.I hope that makes sense, the folks at Vox did a much better job of explaining it than I did.

It still floors me when I use my AD 120 VTH with the 412 BN cabinet.Even with the Steven Grindrod designed Wharfedales ( Steven played a large part in developing the Celestion Greenbacks,Vintage 30s plus a lot of the better known Marshall and Vox amps-he's also the brains behind the incredible Albion amps) the amp sounds incredible.I have done back to back comparisons with my JCM 800s and the Vox on the Marshall settings and the similarity is uncanny, the same goes for the Fender settings.A couple of the settings are supposed to emulate Dumble Overdrive Specials on clean and dirty settings, except for a SRV concert I have never heard a Dumble but if the Marshall and Fender voicings (as well as the AC-15 and 30 settings)are anything to go by,it should be close on the Dumble settings too.If that's the case,it means that myself and a lot of other lucky guitarists have saved ourselves $50,000 and still have the Dumble tone.

Roland Jazz Chorus (JC-50).

"The JC-50 jazz chorus is a classic amp by Roland. This is the more portable version of the larger (and heavier) JC-120 which set the standard for loud clean chorused guitar sounds. It provides clean tones that are pristine, yet warm and sweet. This solid-state amp projects the natural sound of your guitar, and excels as a platform for pedals. It sounds great with tube-screamers, and many other pedals. It has full rich reverb, and a stunning built-in footswitchable chorus/vibrato effect made by the king of effects companies: Roland/Boss. The amp is built like a tank, yet is a comfortable weight.

The JC-50 has a full-range 12" speaker in a cabinet that is almost totally enclosed, thereby providing very efficient sound projection. It can be quite loud. Crystalline highs on top of full clean rich lows have made these amps a favorite of guitarists of all stripes. The built-in footswitchable distortion effect can be used at lower settings as a volume boost thererby increasing the amp's versatility. The abundant clean power of the JC-50 also sounds great with keyboards and other instruments."

Love these amps. I used one religiously for years. Practicing and gigging. I refuse to let it go. Perfect with pedals, great clean tones without pedals. Killer amp.
