I need to thin the amp herd. I am keeping my Marshall DSL40 and would like to get a nice SS practice amp. I have some little ones now, but they all sound "digitized". Any suggestions? It really doens't need to be more than 40 watts and I'd like to keep it on the cheap. I've been thinking about a Champion 40?

Fender Frontman 25R Series II
Got everything you need for a little 25 watt amp. 2 channels (clean and drive) and you can plug footswitch in to it to change channels.
Also a 10 inch 8 Ohm speaker. Or headphone jack too.

I have the Frontman 15G, and it has just about the same features (minus the footswitch option) except it has an 8 inch speaker with 15 watts...and it sounds pretty darn good.

Of course nobody is gonna "gig" with either one (unless you mic it through the PA)...but you DID say solid state practice amp.

That 25R Series II can be found for under $100.00 (U.S.), and comes in Red.

Well since you like your Marshall...why not go with a good used Marshall 5005? These baby Marshalls have a good tone, great for practicing and are very reliable and best of all can be had for $150 all day long. I have one (my only non Fender Amp) and it is a fun little amp. It really likes my Les Paul Specials P90's.

You didn't say how you practice. For me, my practice amp needs Aux In for an Ipod, headphone out and no on board effects. I have a little two channel Marshall that works pretty well.

One option.....

These little Yamaha THR amps sound not too bad and they have plenty of features and options.

Here's a great old vintage S/S amp for sale on eBay for not a lot of money. BB King is noted for primarily using Lab Series amps. He used the L5 mostly. He also used a Twin Reverb on occasion and well as a Super Reverb on at least one occasion. The L3 is a 60 watt amp but it should behave like a smaller amp since they were never known for having a lot of clean headroom.

+1 on your thoughts on Fender's new Champion 40. Romp on it! Champions and Rumbles have been flying off the shelves, and Fender can't make them fast enough. They sound great and are very reliable. 8)

Orange Crush 35LDX isn't bad if you like in-your-face British sound. It has a clean and a dirty channel, line out / line in, bass/mid/treble eq, and a decent speaker for being 10" / 25 lbs. I bought mine as a replacement for a Mustang, and haven't regretted that switch at all.
It is also one of the few Orange amps you can get in black.

My practice and small stage amp (300 people) is a Vox Mini3.
It has an output of 3 watts but can get quite loud when the volume and gain are past 9-10.

It has different amp sounds and included effects.
I've been using it for two years, never had a problem!

If you want effects, then go with the Fender Champion 20 series. If not, then you can go with a Fender Frontman 25R. Either way , they're both good amps for home practice.

I don't know about the rest of these guys; but can you please explain what you mean by 'digitized'?

What I got out of it is a 'fake' sound. And the only time I ever experienced a fake or digitized sound was through the Vox Valvetronix VT30 I bought and could not get rid of fast enough. All the effects. amp models, and tap that thing had was (for me) just too much, and I could not find a setting that sounded 'natural'.

A friend of mine just started playing guitar a short time ago, and he bought a Champion 100. That amp has all that stuff on it, but turned out to be a little more manageable than that Vox was for me. I went over, and dialed in a nice clean tone (he wanted a clean sound like he hears me play on my equipment), and told him to leave it alone---and just use the footswitch to switch to drive and back.

Moral of the story: Why buy an "Effects" amp...when you only use one setting?

If I want effects; I get them one at a time, and it is at my foot.
And, I am not knocking effects amps or people that like them and know how to use them...just putting in my experience and two cents.

I really like my VOX VT30. Once dialed in it is a really good little SS/Tube Hybred. Tones are pretty true to the Amps that are modeled.

Roland Jazz Chorus (JC-50).

"The JC-50 jazz chorus is a classic amp by Roland. This is the more portable version of the larger (and heavier) JC-120 which set the standard for loud clean chorused guitar sounds. It provides clean tones that are pristine, yet warm and sweet. This solid-state amp projects the natural sound of your guitar, and excels as a platform for pedals. It sounds great with tube-screamers, and many other pedals. It has full rich reverb, and a stunning built-in footswitchable chorus/vibrato effect made by the king of effects companies: Roland/Boss. The amp is built like a tank, yet is a comfortable weight.

The JC-50 has a full-range 12" speaker in a cabinet that is almost totally enclosed, thereby providing very efficient sound projection. It can be quite loud. Crystalline highs on top of full clean rich lows have made these amps a favorite of guitarists of all stripes. The built-in footswitchable distortion effect can be used at lower settings as a volume boost thererby increasing the amp's versatility. The abundant clean power of the JC-50 also sounds great with keyboards and other instruments."

The Vox VT Series amps are deadly for emulating the authentic tube amp sound due to a 12AX7 tube in the power amp section, not the pre amp section as some reviews state. This innovation is what allows for an even more realistic overdrive tone as well as a warmer clean tone than most SS amps have.A real plus for VT Series amps is incredible realism in the amp models,of which there 33,the effects of these amps is nothing short of astounding. The effects are almost dead ringers for the original effects that they emulate, the Leslie effect model actually ramps its speed up and down gradually just like an actual Leslie cabinet, the same goes for the Uni-Vibe effect. All the modulation effects are far more superior to the competition. The delay/reverb/echo effects are as close to studio quality as you can come without spending hundreds more, they are simply the best I have heard in any amps in their price range and even many costing much more.Try out a VT series Vox and you wont be disappointed. The older VT series such as the AD 20,30,40,60 and 120 VTX or AD 120 VTH can be bought for really low prices on ebay and they are even more versatile than the current ones IMHO (I have the old AD 120 VTH head with a 412 BN stereo cabinet and it's a tone monster).Anyway these amps are really well worth checking out.
