Maple on strats and teles, rosewood on everything else. Also, maple is supposed to give a "snappier" tone.

I like them both - my EC has maple and my Kramer has Rosewood. Both sound good through a cranked Marshall.

What guitars come with untreated maple fretboards? As far as I know, they are all sealed and lacquered, be it with polyurethane, acrylic, other lacquers, or in one famous case superglue.
Old Fender guitars may have the lacquer worn off, in which case they will definitely show marks too.

That said, rosewood has to be oiled every now and then to stay hale. A tiny bit of oil goes a long way, and neglecting to do it at all makes the wood more susceptible to damage, especially the softer Indian rosewood.

I have no preference, because rosewood is all I have ever known. Someday I will play a guitar with a maple fretboard just to see what all the fuss is about.

I think old and grungy strings sound best over a rosewood fingerboard.

I certainly hope so, because I change the strings on my Strat about every 3 years.

I like maple: the bounce off like basketball court. Easier to clean too... Had a Hagstrom with composite board that impressed me. Just had a thought: ever seen an acoustic guitar with maple fret board? I mean regular commercial, not a one off...

It's rare but not extremely rare. At least Gibson, Ibanez, Tanglewood have had it in their production models.
And I got a 50 year old Harmony Archtone with maple fingerboard, which they saw fit to paint black

Edit: on the poll, no preference.

I'm not sure if it's "over-kill", but I apply oil every time I change strings.
I used to use FretFast...but it seems thin, like more of a cleaner than an oil treatment. I switched to Dunlop 65 Lemon Oil; much thicker, and now when I apply it, I have to wipe off excess (the wood absorbs what it needs, and puddles where it doesn't. FastFret seemed to absorb all regardless how much I applied).

I have seven guitars, so it takes a while before the Rosewood guitars need a string change---this is why I don't feel like I'm using too much. Plus, I figure if the wood absorbs the oil (especially now with the thicker Dunlop oil)...it must have needed it? Right? Or is it too much, too often?

Unless you're like the guy here who changes strings every three years, it's probably overkill. But it won't do any harm as long as you wipe off excess oil, and use actual oil and not something like naphtha which will dry out the wood instead of nourishing it.

Since you wipe off excess, I do not think you can do any harm that way. Any oil that the wood absorbs quickly is going to make it stronger and (IMO) better feeling and looking.

I'm an old fashioned bar room Tele player. I prefer a maple baseball bat.

Maple is easier for me to see in a poorly lit bar room setting.

A properly "oiled" rosewood fret board feels good to me, but so doesn't a "dry" maple neck. I like rosewood on acoustics , but, a nice Fender maple neck feels pretty good to me too. I guess... :D  :!:
