Hey Guys,

Just got my new Strat yesterday..... it is GLORIOUS. I'm going to post some pics soon.

But I was wondering how all you guys learned and mastered the craft of playing electric guitar? Aside from hours and hours of practice, which is a given for any devoted player. I'm wondering what method everyone took. I took lessons well I was away at university but have now moved back home and haven't started any new lessons. I think lessons are the best route for some starting out but I'm fairly short on cash (being that I just bought my Strat).

Can anyone suggest any online sites? or any books or dvds? are dvd tutorials any good??
Thanks

Gear,

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new Strat! I can't wait to see the pics! In case you didn't know it, you are now eligible to win the VG Strat that is being given away to one lucky Fender Forum participant. Pretty cool huh?

I am still in the learning stage myself. I have been using the Hal Leonard books. I love them and they are a good fit for me. And they say old dogs can't learn new tricks! I am an old drummer that decided to get out from behind my kit.

If you do a Google search, there are many places to get free lessons. Plus You Tube is full of them as well. What works for one, may not work for another. You kind of just got to try them until you find the one that feels right for you.

Not very informative, but I hope it helps a little.

But I haven't experience in online lessions so I can't tell a serious site.

Has anyone experience in online lessons?

cheers :D

I agree with Bill. Go to a bookstore and look at the learn to play books and see if there is one that fits. Otherwise I'm sure there are online learning venues that might fit. Congratulations on your purchase of a very fine musical instrument.

If you check out http://www.homespuntapes.com/ there are a ton of great DVD's and CD's in all different styles and stages of playing that you can purchase.

Also Fender has a pretty good instructional DVD called Fender Presents: Getting Started on Electric Guitar -- A Guide for Beginners

The lessons are given by Keith Wyatt who is a great player/teacher, I think he has done lesson videos for everyone on the planet Hal Leonard, Homespun etc...

I think that the best way after you get your scales down, is to just out on a cd (live cd's are better) and play along.

A mix of lessons and playing with others. Lessons are important but nothing makes you a better musicians then having to play right and in time with others.

All the places you listed! But for me I have found lessons with a teacher is un parralelled to the other methods there is so much more to playing that cant be easily conveyed without person to person interaction and having some one there to LISTEN and advise to what your doing is so important to developing your sound.
