(New Purple Pedal Day)

My gettingoldersucksday present to myself arrived in the mail today:

Spaceman Aphelion Harmonic Overdrive

it sounds awesome too.
The gain control is a standard old gain, meaning no sound at all if at zero.
The drive control is subtle on the volume, and adds harmonics as it's increased.
The tone control is more of a filter, cutting some noise, especially with single-coil.

In all, it sounds as great as it looks. Very wide range, and very responsive to how hard I play.
Much better than the OCD it replaces (which in turn replaced an awful TC, which replaced a Boss) I predict that the dirty channel on the amp will see less use with this one hooked up, and that this will become a goto pedal for me.

But what does it sound like? Instead of redoing what others have done better, I'll just point to Nick Jaffe's review:

Nice.

The $340 price tag makes it not quite as nice. (in my eyes)

Congrats though.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yeah, the law of diminishing returns apply to guitars and pedals too - the improvement per dollar becomes less and less as the price goes up.
Is a $4000 guitar ten times better than a $400 one? Hardly. But is it better - sure.

The Pete Cornish SS2, which is relatively similar to Zak Martin's Aphelion, is almost twice the price. But it's doubtful whether it's twice as good. But still worth it to most of those who get it, I'm sure.
In this case, I think of the price as something I divide by how much I use it. Would you pay a quarter to rent a good pedal for an hour? Anyhow, that's how I look at it. :)

Just Nick does some good video's. I'm sitting here waiting for delivery of my $399 Alairex Halo OD. It would be fun to get these two pedals in the same room for a shoot out. What are you doing tomorrow?

Yeah, I like Just Nick because he isn't clinical - he spends some time with the gear before doing the review, so he can highlight what's good or special about it. "Neutral" reviews like Scott Grove do are pretty useless, in my opinion. It's like taking a Land Rover and a Mustang into in city traffic, and conclude that both suck. With Nick Jaffe, that isn't much of a problem - he is subjective, and the first to admit it, and goes an extra mile in finding out what the gear is actually good for. Which isn't always what the sales brochure says.

Two three-way switches, two stomp switches and eight knobs? I am sure you can get exactly the drive sound you want out of it, and can have two distinct setups pre-stored too, but man, that's a lot of things to adjust up front! But let us know how it sounds, and as always, pics are welcome (also of the insides!)

Plans for tomorrow are to see how it works with other pedals, and how it works with SS amps. I already know it does small harmonic wonders with my tube amp, but how much of that is the pedal, and how much are the 12AX7s obeying a new master?

Yes, the Halo, (which didn't get delivered yesterday), will be vying with my Eventide H9 as my most complicated pedal. The H9 has every algorithm that Eventide makes and is controlled by an Ipad. I admit it can be a chore to mess with it, but I'm getting better at it.
As a point of reference concerning expensive pedals. The H9 is the most expensive pedal I have, and Eventide just released a gold plated version of it. Why, I don't know. But I understand it nails the Goldfinger tone! :D
