That would be V for violin. The violin that I ordered less than a week ago came today and it's far beyond my expectations. The quality of the violin is very good with no flaws in the finish and no sign.s of sloppy gluing on the inside of it.The case that it came in is very heavy Gore-Tex and it has a rigid frame around it,so it's almost as good as a hardshell case,at least for my usage it will be.All the strings have fine tuners on them too and in fact the only thing that I can find any fault with is in fact the strings, they aren't of the highest quality,so it's off to my mom & pop music store tomorrow for a set of decent strings, then all I have left to do,is learn how to play the little brute.

BTW: I had more nerve conduction studies and the technician told me that from what he could see from the preliminary readings, the results are normal, which would mean that the problem isn't neurological and he was postulating that it could be related to the Raynaud's and/or arthritis,so it's almost back to square one yet again...over 5 years trying to get a diagnosis-even a decent prognosis-of what's causing the atrophy, fatigue, pain etc. in my hands, and I still can't get to the root of the problem. Oh well it's all part of growing up.Which reminds me of a cartoon that I saw a few days ago. A little fella says to his mother "I want to be musician when I grow up." to which she replies "Well make up your mind son...you can't do both."

Cool , I did up a cheap (3 bucks) violin. I find keeping it in tune very frustrating. Hopefully yours is of better quality. Also my fingers can't deal with the tiny scale length. I'm thinking I'll try something larger one day (Viola ?).
Anyway, I absolutely love the feeling of bow on string.
How about a picture mate ?

Goodonya ...Mark.

Heard that one before but it still makes me chuckle.

I have a violin.
Mine isn't a new one.
I honestly don't even know how old it is.
I suspect it's not a valuable vintage piece though.
It was part of an inheritance and it needed a lot of work to refurbish.
I was never able to make music with it.
The bowing and the tuning are completely foreign feeling to me.
Tuned in fifths keeps me thinking too much.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm an old fiddler. Yes, it won't stay in tune. It gets better if you prep the pegs with powdered resin, but then they will get much harder to turn too, as the pegs will move in jerks. It takes a gentle hand to get it right then. And for the E string, you do want a fine-tuner on the other side of the bridge. Either on the string itself, or on the tailpiece. (I recommend the former, as it also helps dampen the vibration in the plain metal E string that otherwise can sound hard compared to the naturally dampened strings.)
As for the short action, well, yes. But given that one rarely play with more than one finger at a time, there's not really much of a space issue. You just have to be far more precise.
And unlike on a guitar, calluses don't help.

But the sound of a good violin is awesome. A solo violinist can fill a concert hall with sound from that little unamplified device.

I put a very good set of strings on my violin yesterday and I was really surprised by the difference that good strings made not only on the tone, but it also improved the tuning and its ability to stay in tune enormously.I actually was able to do a passable job-for a beginner-of "The Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss Jr.I'm finding the angle which I have to hold it at in order to reach all the strings either bit easily, plays havoc on the arthritis in the wrists of both hands, time to go back on the Celebrex (it's still being prescribed in Canada).I have never taken lessons for any instrument that I have picked up so I don't intend to start now, even though the mayor of our town has a music tuition studio, so I'm starting to look for some instruction videos,it's the proper way to position of the violin on the shoulder that I have the biggest problem with,I'm pretty comfortable with how to hold the bow and the proper bowing technique.

Ever since I was a kid and first saw a 16 year old Itzhak Perlman on the Ed Sullivan show,I loved the violin,so it's about time that I took it up.Irish/Celtic and Newfoundland music is the predominant musical form around here but I have an inborn aversion to it,so no doubt I'll be slaving away over classical music.I have CDs of every piece that Mozart has written for violin as well as the complete recorded works of Paganini plus a good bit of Bach,Beethoven,Mendelssohn,Vivaldi etc. so all that remains is to pick out what songs sound easier to play.....if there is such a thing.
