In the past the gold lettering was used on squiers with certain features. So, if you did change it to gold, some might consider that misleading. I would cover it up with something removable in case you ever want to sell/trade it. I would not sand it unless you plan to keep it forever (really forever).

Deluxe Matt , I don't have any plans to sell it or trade it for anything contrary to what CCRGuitarman or anybody else says . Yes I admit I have done that in the past but , I am not that person anymore. I have learned my lesson from my mistakes and lord knows how much money I've spent over the years on equipment with either buying or trading, etc I'm 55 years old now and am tired of wheeling and dealing. I now have 2 excellent Fender Acoustics which are a 1999 DG20S and a CD60CE , along with a Epiphone 56 re-issue Gold Top Les Paul w/P-90's along with my 1988 Fender Studio 85 amp and my Squier Affinity Strat. I believe that is more than enough gear for myself to use and am quite content with what I have. Sure I'm going to have my doubters on here and I'm okay with that. I don't have anything to prove to them at all IMO. For the first time in years , I am at peace with myself and have found true happiness from within . That is all that matters and nothing more. Peace !

Well, if you can't screw up and learn from it, becoming a better person in the process, there is no hope for any of us. I know I've made some whoppers in my time and I have changed a tremendous amount as a person over the years. Hopefully for the better.

Believe me Matt , I've learned from my mistakes . The only thing I'm doing to that Strat , is installing a new 3 ply WBW pickguard which I'm still waiting to come in. Other then that, it's staying all stock and I have enough gear as far as I'm concerned.

A long time ago, when I was much more fussy about things, I bought a Standard Strat and later noticed there was an air bubble underneath the headstock decal.

I contacted Fender, who put me in touch with a local Gold Service provider.

Fender honored what must have amounted to a warranty claim, and the solution was to replace the entire neck on the guitar. I did this, but in hindsight it was way more trouble than it was worth.

The weird thing is that, after the replacement, I had a bit of an identity crisis regarding which serial number was the right one. The one on the old neck (which was sent back to Fender) or the new one.

I would never do such a trite and trivial thing again.

Perhaps this is reaching but this has me thinking, Gilmour’s black strat has a Charvel neck with a Fender decal on the headstock. Now certainly no one will argue the value of this guitar is more due to the gentleman that owns it but its still far from the original neck which was a CBS era strat with Rosewood neck then fitted with a maple neck custom built by Grover Jackson. Is Gilmour’s guitar a “Partscaster”. I think one could arguably say yes.

The way I figure it is if (1) you pay your taxes, (2) call your mom on Mother's day, and (3) willing to stand up and take your hat off during the National Anthem, then you are okay with me ... regardless of what is on your headstock. But .. that is just me ...

My bought from new Strat, (A 1996, Japanese made 1968 reissue) had, when it arrived, a kinked "Stratocaster" part of the decal under the headstock finish
At first, it didn't bother me , it had a gold Fender and small straocaster , so wasn't too noticeable
When i was cleaning the kilo and a half of amber tinted laquer from the frets,(which I ended up doing by carefully running a stanley knife blade along the fret bottom edge and scraping the laquer off the actual frets with a piece of old credit card), I had an accident , the strings which were still attached trough the tremolo and were tied together with a piece of ribbon and left dangling off the kitchen table were caught by our dogs fur, she yelped and one of the strings must have caught her consequently I made a nasty scratch across the 13th fret space
I ended up taking it to a luthier in Manchester , he had the neck for a week and it came back great (or so I thought) , the only differences were the "Made in Japan" and serial number were sanded off the back of the heel of the neck

I played it like that for about 5 weeks till one day I noticed cracks appearing all over the neck , upon inspection it looked like the laquer he'd used was reacting with the nitro left deep in the grain and cracking (After talking to him, it transpires that's exactly what it was , he hadn't used nitro on it)

He took it back and refinished and refretted it yet again (free of charge) but rang me and said he didn't have any more correct logos left and would I accept a transitional logo , I told him yes as I thought the large headstock looked better with a big "Stratocaster" on it (Jimi's had one like that anyway )
Got it back and the neck is really smooth and the fretboard edges are rounded just like a custom shop job . He sprayed a fairly thick layer on the fretboard (which 17 years later, has checked nicely)but he said the headstock could do with a few more coats, so I got it home and got hold of a can of nitro from a paint mixing shop near me and masked it off and did in total 17 coats , rubbing down every 3 coats , this has resulted in the logo completely under the finish (which now, has aged to a natural amber colour , way better than the artificial amber colour Fender japan did on it )

While I was at it, I got the neckplate engraved with a Fender logo in block capitals and had the serial number put on too

Regardless of what anyone says it is (and always was ) a genuine Fender , the only thing changed from stock is the logo and frets

Here is what it looks like now

And when you someday sell that guitar, someone posts to the forum with "Look, there's another fake MIJ on ebay!"...

Or when whoever he (or his bequeathed) sells it to flips it again, the same problem occurs.
The intentions might not be bad, but we can predict that it will cause problems down the road, and there's only one person responsible for that.

Don't be silly
I was going to write a post saying how stupid that comment was, but I just literally can't be arsed

Not meaning to arse anybody, but that's exactly what is to be expected.
Too many fakes floating around, so every detail counts.

Edit:
Just to clarify the matter: you see an ad of a guitar for sale. "Refinished neck, new Fender labels". Would you raise your level of caution?
What about if those things weren't mentioned in the ad, but you'd notice them yourself?
