And is your wife's comment that you have "selective hearing"? What's your loss from?

Lot's of new people have joined since I posted this thread, so I thought I would bring it to the front again. Any new responses?

hey! i'm not deaf, but i am supposedly going blind... i'm about 20/200 last time anybody checked. i can't see past 12 inches in front of my face without glasses. it really sucks. it makes it really hard to play keyboards b/c the keys are just past my rims... i had to get the light up keyboard so i could see what keys i'm playing... it helps, and it's really fun to play in the dark. my eyes are so bad, they use me as a 2nd year case study in optometry school (hope i spelled that right.) i'm just 18, so my struggle's far from over. you guys who've been battling with stuff like this for years are really an inspiration to me... thanks.

God Bless,
jess

Thanks to you to JH. I have found that since I grew up with hearing loss, and hearing aids, it is actually a good thing at times. I can tune people out if I don't want to listen to them. Click of the switch and, "What? I didn't know you were talking to me!" Really pissed folks off when I did that. But, hey, if you are going to yell at me just because I wear hearing aids, and you think I can't hear you, what else was I supposed to do?

i don't know Barry. i suppose that you could yell at them back. either way, it sucks when people stereotype because of a handicap. i hate it when people treat me like a baby because i can't distinguish objects without my glasses past a foot in front of my face. if i need their help i'll ask for it. can't they understand that?

okay, does anyone else get this...
i've heard people say that people with... let's call them "disadvantages"... aren't good musicians... sure, having a skin allergy to metal makes playing for long periods of time a but difficult, but i just put down the guitar in the middle of the set and switch to keyboard or sax... look at some of the greats... Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Beethoven, i know that those are mostly piano people, but still, shouldn't we get a chance to shine too?

yeah, BP. i'm finding that college kids can be a little cruel... oh well... my band is about to going to the studio sometime before christmas... and we already have a gig lined up in may... i just told him that we're called the Unexpected for a reason... you typically wouldn't expect 3 out of 5 members of a screamo band to be wearing glasses... i'l keep you posted...

Hey Jess,
Another hurdle for you to get over. Not good news for you, but you will adapt and deal with it. I was diagnosed with Reversed Retinitus Pigmentosis three years ago. This is a disease of the eyes and, I am told, will lead to eventual blindness. It is rare and hereditary, and common in children born with hearing loss. Mine was discovered later than usual. So someone in my family tree has had it. So I am deaf, going blind... at least I am not dumb! You know what works for me, though... I don't think about it. I have a great life and what will happen will happen... we go on living and adapt best we can.

Since this is a very serious issue among musicians, I thought I would bring this topic back to life again.

SAVE YOUR EARS!!!!!

I've seen a lady who is a trained percussionist, focusing on marimba, and is completely deaf. She watched another person playing, and pointed out a wrong note.
