Folks,

I was born with a severe hearing loss that was discovered at age 2. I have worn hearing aids all my life. Music was (and still is) a great outlet for me. I remember when playing a gig one night, I was approached by a listener who asked "How is it you do what you do when you can't hear?" It was so loud in the place, my reply was "What?"

Any way... music touched my inner spirit, and when you place a guitar or bass next to your body, you can feel the music. Any one remember the movie Mr. Holland's Opus? If you haven't seen it, check it out.

I was wondering if any of you other musicians are deaf or have hearing loss and how you cope?

I have slight hearing loss from loud machines and motorcycles. I also have a constant ringing in my ears called tinitus (sp).
I should have hearing aids but my insurance won't cover them with the amount of hearing loss I have at this point.

Chet... Hearing aids are not cheap. And you are correct... insurance does not cover them. I paid $1,600 for a new digital hearing aid three years ago. But I can't live without it. It's how I was raised, with this device attached to my ear all my life, but I don't even notice it. And it certainly doesn't affect how well I play guitar.

People that hear me play wish for temporary hearing loss. In all seriousness, my brother in law has severe hearing loss and wears hearing aids. He is a great fan of music and hits more shows then I can count.

Sound is vibrations so even if you can't hear it you can still feel it?

C63,

Yup... you're right... sound is vibration... that's why I was referring to the movie Mr. Holland's Opus.

Hats off to your brother-in-law.

C'mon guitar players... Let's hear your story! Don't be leer about that thing in your ear. And if you do play loud, wear those plugs. You'll be thankful in the future.

Seriously... any other hard of hearing or deaf musicians out there???

Give me about 30 years and I should be a deaf guitar player. I think I better invest in those earplugs soon.

Yes... either the earplugs or you'll be spending your guitar money on hearing aids.

I guess I'll have to wait on more replies to this one. Must be a lot of young ones here that can chat about being deaf in about 30 years. I can wait...

well first off MR Hollands Opus is one of my favorite movies. realy realy great! second off i think its an amazing thing for someone that is hearing impaired to love music. i myself cant hear certain frequency ranges that normal people can and there are some i hear that most people can't. they first figured this out when i was 16 and they made me do a hearing test 6 times cus they thought i was messing with them. i dont know how but its true. ive been to 3 hearing specialists, at one point i thought they wanted to lock me up and do experiments on me. lol. i also have a slight hearing loss from loud music in general. i used to be friends with someone that was born deaf and mute but by the time she was 18 she could read lips and talk just as well as anyone else. she loved music too and it always fascinated me. she mostly felt the mids and bass and would lay on the floor when a sub was around so she could "hear" it better. we used to teach her the lyrics to songs cus she wasnt able to hear them, or she would just make up her own and sing away without even caring one bit. it takes a strong person to have a disadvantage of any kind and say "screw you universe im still kicking". good thread!

I have hearing loss (read - hearing impaired) and was told to get a hearing aid, but I'm not that bad yet. My wife wouldn't agree to that though.

Hey Fendergep...

It was great to read your reply. I understand about feeling like the doctors always wanting to do experiments. I can remember when I was younger, always having to go to the hospital for my hearing test. They always locked me in this little room and put headphones on me and I just did what they asked me to. I never really understood why until I got a little older. I had extensive speech therapy then, too, and also learned to read lips.

Thanks for the comment on this being a great thread. I hope others respond as you did.

So, you are no longer friends with your deaf friend?
