Hello,

I am helping the original owner of a 1954 Left handed Fender Stratocaster (belived to be the first) figure out the value and market of this piece of American history.

We have documentation from fender (1990) stating that this may be the first Left Fender Stratocaster

The document reads in part; "We at Fender, through careful examination, believe this
to be one of the first, if not the first left-handed Stratocaster made."

This guitar still belongs to the original owner and was refinished by Fender in 1990.

Any information would be great. More information available upon request.

All else being correct, a refinished knocks the value in half. I would place a value of $10K on it, if it looks good and doesn't have any issues. Being lefty doesn't increase the value in my experience (if anything it shrinks the market).

Somehow I cannot see someone owning a guitar for 60 years, and loving it enough to have it refinished by Fender at a cost higher than many new guitars suddenly wanting to know the value. To him, the worth must surely be beyond any dollar figure - priceless.
This smells of sharks and vultures - I truly hope i am wrong.

I can't see the people in Fender's refinishing department having anything to do with vandalizing what could quite possibly be one of the most important guitars in Fender's history,as they would all know full well that a guitar that played such an important role in the development of the Stratocaster line would have to be free from any kind of alterations whatsoever.Something about this story has me feeling more than a bit doubtful.

with all due respect to the peeps with the knowledge on this forum, no one is going to know beyond ball park guesstimates. IMO, you'd want this dead nuts on this one.

Frets? Paint? set up?
Discuss.

I didn't think Fender made leftys this early. At any rate with an instrument this rare, drive it to George Ghrun in Nashville. For $250 he'll give you the most professional written appraisal on planet Earth. Then you and every Fender collector will know for sure. Don't pussyfoot around with this.

This+1.
Also, I don't think there were any left handed people in 54 other than Jimi and he played a righty flipped over. All the other people that appeared left handed were actually playing in a mirror because they had stage/camera fright.

Jimi Hendrix was eleven for most of '54.
Al King, on the other hand, came out with "Bad Luck Blues" in 1954. But he wasn't playing Fenders.
And Slim Whitman, but he played acoustic.
Dick Dale probably played in '54, but he didn't record anything until much later. But he might have had an early leftie strat.
But not Hendrix, no.

I thought Fender stopped doing refinishing and appraisals way before 1990.
