Howdy. A quick question regarding a P-Bass online purchase.

I am receiving a new, in the sealed Fender carton, American Standard P-Bass from a Fender Authorized dealer. This is my first online guitar purchase.

Is the bass ready to play right out of the carton? Or, does the bass require a technician 'set up'?. With my new and used in-store purchase experiences, the store tech would check and set up as needed.

I look forward to any info and experiences. Thanks in advance.

It will be set up, but you need to do it again, because the temperature, humidity and age of the wood won't be the same as at the factory.
Sure, you can play it, but strings might rattle, the action might be too high, the intonation may be off and any frets close to the pickups will sound sour, or combinations of these.

And no, you don't have to pay someone to do it. i recommend learning how to do it yourself, not only because you save a lot of money over the years, but because most technicians (and many luthiers!) don't give the neck time to settle after truss rod adjustments or change to different strings, so it might be off the next day.
Anyone who does a setup while you wait is not worth paying for.

I've purchased two Fender instruments (a Squier VM Jaguar Bass and a Mexican made Cabronita Thinline Telecaster) from an authorized online dealer, and I had to do a little set-up work in both cases. I've seen reviews where people say that their instruments were set up perfectly out of the box, so I think it's possible that you won't have to do a set-up.

Both of my instruments needed intonation adjustments, and my bass needed a truss rod adjustment. I had never done these adjustments before, but following the set-up guides on Fender's support site was relatively straight forward. If you're comfortable changing strings and taking a screw driver to your bass, you can likely get it adjusted to your liking all on your own.

Of course, it's probably never bad advice to get your new bass set up by a pro. Whatever happens, congrats on the new purchase! I hope you enjoy making music with it, and feel free to let us know about how your set-up experience turns out!

Cheers,
Dave.

thanks. yes, I had a gut feeling this needs to be set up and checked due to shipping, climate change etc. I was put off by the online assistant who said if it was an in-store purchase, the set up would be free but online purchases are not. if you brought it in to the sellers brick and mortar store, you would be charged approx. $35. when I asked if there was a coupon or promo code to offset the charge, they said no, it was not their policy. lesson learned. I am comfortable setting up the bass myself and am really excited to receive the new machine.

here's a snap of my current 'old' machine - a 1977 Music Man Sting Ray Bass. I love it.
