I'm new to this forum, so hello everyone.
I'm am just getting back into playing guitar after 35 years away, my bad, (don't ask). I am getting re-involved because my grand daughter is interested in playing and I am interested in joining her in her quest. Looking over the web, things have changed dramatically over the years since the 60's as you can well imagine.
I'm am currently looking at two guitars, One is an american standard strat, the other is a Gretsch 5420. I realize this is going to be a personal preference decision. I'm leaning towards the Strat at this point.
The real problem is the amp. I am looking for an amp with two clean channels, if there is such a beast. The reason is, I would like to have the ability to have my grand daughter bring her guitar over to my place and not have to drag along a separate amp for practice and to "jam". The amps I'm seeing seem to have a clean channel and a distorted channel. Can the distortion be tuned out to make the second channel clean. Any questions to clarify or any amp suggestions would be appreciated.
Sorry for the long post.

You might want to take a look at Rivera amps. They are pricey but they are also very high quality. Rivera takes a different approach to channel switching amps. Almost all of the models they sell have a similar theme. You have two channels but it's not a case of clean versus dirty. It's more a case of Fender versus Marshall. Both channels behave like a simple single channel amplifier. Both channels can be dialled in to either clean and chimey or crunchy and gritty depending on the relationship between pre-amp gain level and power-amp gain level. Both channels have one of each.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Are you saying you want an amp that can play 2 guitar signals at once?

I assume you will both have your own amps? I'm not sure it's that much of a hardship to transport a small practice amp. And if it is, you can easily find something cheap and cheerful that will do the job that you can keep at your place as a spare.

What's the price range? What kind of power do you need?

The first thing that pops in my mind is to have a custom made (tube) amp built. Don't know where you live, so won't give a recommendation on who to contact, but there are plenty of amp makers just about everywhere.

Fender reissues, like the '65 Princeton Reverb, has two insturment inputs into the clean channel. They are a little pricey at $950 list, but it should serve you well for a long time.
By the way, I didn't touch my guitar for about 30 years. I picked it up again three years ago. I took lessons for over two years. I'm gettting to the point where I can play pretty well and am loving it. It's not easy, but it can be done. There's quite a few forum members with similar stories. Keep at it, you'll be glad you did.

If you're not looking to gig with a band and just play for fun, I would buy a couple of Fender Frontman 25R combos. Brand new, they go for 99 bucks each but if you go to Guitar Center's website and hit the used gear section, you can usually get them for around at least 50 bucks each.

I cannot believe it has taken until me to post this, but the OP stated: "I am looking for an amp with two clean channels".

The Answer: '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. 2 Separate Clean Channels. Classic Tones. Plays at home/practice levels without damaging ear drums.

Drew365 was pretty similar and yeh both right and of course recommended.

My own thought pattern went along the lines of....just coming back to playing.....wanting to share an amp with a beginner...and in the home.
But yeh agreed!! both the 65 Deluxe and the Princetons are good mutli purpose workhorses.

I'm sure that produces sound, but I'm not too sure how it will sound.
instrument level output -> line level input
headphone level output -> instrument level input

Like a dimed overdrive pedal with the guitar volume turned down?

probably right arth1.. and full disclosure...if ya look at my profile you probably won't see a lot of action in the amp sections.......I WAS thinking more along the lines of learning and beginning and jamming...so admittedly I probably shouldn't have weighed in at all...not my expertise lol.
But 65 deluxe reverb WAS actually the amp my brother had when we were kids and often times there were two guitars or a guitar and bass plugged into that when we played the intermission at the movie theater or practiced in the garage (yes in the 60's )
Mea culpa---don't hate me cuz I'm beautiful though ;O)
