I've been looking over this section of the Fender website, and I got to say that this is really cool. Limited, but cool. I wish that I could add some more pickup choices, but over all I like it.

I do have one concern: the used guitar market. There will be two types of sellers.

Seller 1. Had the guitar built, loved it, play it and then at some point decide that he or she want to sell it.

Seller 2. Buy a bunch of parts (some Fender, some not), put the guitar together and then try to pass it off as a legitimate "American Design Experience" guitar.

Two things may happen: 1. Seller 1 will be looked at with suspicion. 2. Seller 2 will scam some poor buyer out of a hard earned money.

Does this remind anyone of the current problem facing the used guitar market? The market is flooded with fake Fender Custom shop guitars, and there are a lot of people getting taken.

You may vote, "yes" or "no," as well as check the third option.

I voted yes. Only because I think these are potential problems, and that some people may run into them. I don't think it's going to turn into a giant issue, though. As always. Buyer beware. As far as a better system? I think the time has come for a more robust database. Something that probably should have been done long ago, but now the technology makes it easier. It's simply a matter of having a "look up" feature with the floor rider available. That way you can look up the s/n and see what specs went into the instrument you are buying. However, until Fender decides to make Nitro bodies available it's a problem I won't have.

As far as buying used guitars is concerned , I would buy from Guitar Center where I know I'm not getting a say, a Fender neck that's paired with a plywood body which had happened to me once years ago. Concerning E-Bay , I would only buy on there from a reputable dealer who has a very high rating and I know who can be trusted. It all just comes down to common sense and not jumping on the 1st thing that catches your eye IMO.

I voted for better authentication... Just exactly HOW to do that... not sure.
Once any authentication process becomes known... there's the problem of fraud/scam issues all over again... Things can be faked to those specs....

Overall... I don't feel that the "American Design Experience" is going to pose any new threats to the used guitar market... I think it's an awesome thing they have with this... get a cool custom guitar built to your specs... with some very nice "Personaliztion" tweeks that can be added w/ the engraved neck plate.
I thinks is a winner... kind of like the "Working Guitarist's Custom Shop Guitar"... a custom made instrument at an affordable price point.

Paris, I voted no for this as I think Forum members would not be fooled and guitar players generally not too. Other types of buyers I can not relate to so they should just use caution as a common sense solution IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian) :D

I think the answer lies within itself.

The fender electric was made to be disassembled and if need be, replaced parts..

I think we've created a solution to a problem we have created. Afterall, if Fender would take a stance about the dangers of counterfeiting and parting out guitars to be remade & sold for a gross profit on ebay, do you think they would have by now? Because I don't see any disclaimers or 'how to spot a fake' or any article on the matter posted on the fender.com website..

In reality, I don't think it's going to hurt fenders sales to the point of them losing sleep at night.

I wish this were true, but there are plenty of forum members who end up asking the question, "Is this real?"--after they have purchased the instrument.

For the most part, many forum members are very knowledgable, and they are a great resource for authentication, but many members are new to the Fender world may not be as knowledgable. Also, there are countless players who don't come here, yet purchase bad copies.

My concern isn't for Fender; it's for the countless people who spend hard earned money on Fender copies. I don't mind copies. There are many great copies out there, but I think that it's a problem when people try to sell a copy as the genuine article. There are lots of people getting ripped off, especially in the Custom Shop market.

Just this past week I read ran into a thread where a buyer was concerned about a Custom Shop Tele.

The best advice I can give any buyer is, "Do your homework before you buy."

They already have a "Data Base".... All of these instruments would be completed and shipping out with a valid Fender Serial #... Why wouldn't they add those to the database... do you know something different about that?

I voted NO.

I would rarely buy any used instrument without playing it first or if I did, ONLY from an established Seller with a favorable (to me) Return Policy !!

Anyone doing otherwise is foolish and deserves what they end up with !

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFOREHAND ! Fraud, Counterfeits and Deception are facts of life - Caveat Emptor !

If, as a Seller you're worried about Fakes depressing the Market, make sure that everything is documented on any guitars you plan on selling.

Fender's biggest competitor isn't counterfeiters, it's Fender of Yesteryear.

cheers!

I said no because I do not see how Fender would gain anything out of an authentication process, the used guitar market does nothing for Fender.

I understand the OP concern, but that is a caveat emptor thing. You just need to do your due diligence when purchasing used market products. Regardless of what they are. Just my $.02

Thats very true. If anything over the last 25 years, the used market has given way to the relic fad and the need for Fender to charge like a wounded bull for one. When i was a teenager, the last thing anyone would want is a beat up old vintage electric guitar, it was all about getting the most mint one you could find.
