Good enough reason as any. When you can't pump those bike pedals, pump some guitar pedals!!!

Do you ever ride inside with the TV showing a riding path? I always thought that might be a cool way to workout when the weather was bad. I'm sure they have setups with simulated hills and everything. Better speed up there's a big dog chasing you!

I play guitar for fun and as a stress reliever. As an artist, its the best way for me to express myself musically and find "my voice" when mere words simply will not do me justice.

I also love guitars. As of now, I have three. I think that constitutes as a collection.

1993 Fender Stratocaster - Squier Series. But upgraded with Fender Lace Sensor pickups. Its been "my number one" for the past 20 years.

2010 Fender Telecaster - Blacktop Series. This is "my slide guitar"

2013 Fender American Special Stratocaster. Her name is "Blythe" and she will be my main guitar for the next 20 years hehehe

Its strictly gym work and headphones in bad weather I'm afraid. If i was was on the turbo in front of the TV I could be playing guitar too though! That's a thought.

Interesting thread :D But the poll has got too few choices , as said before (yes , I read it all)
I picked up a guitar at 14 too see how it worked , how it was possible to really play it . At that point I had been playing the piano for years , and had some ideas of how to use it . Most out of curiosity .
Today the guitar is the instrument I use the most , among several others. Suits me perfect when I try out/compose new songs :!: Of course I've become an experienced player through the years , but I know I can always be better. In fact , that does not bother me much- I am lucky to have friends (band :) ) who can manage to do what I can't
So , my main reason for playing , is to be able to express my own (and others') music.
These days I do some live jobs, and I like it - but don't really love it. Still some traces of stage fright :( But I love it when the audience is applauding and give us good feedback- both for playing , and for the songs . It's a good feeling that others like what I make ! There is no big money in it (yet 8) ) , though it is very satisfying!
So I am sorry to say - I did not find any alternative to vote

The poll was just a way to get the conversation going. With all the different reasons people do the things they do, I'm not sure a poll could cover all the reasons people enjoy the guitar or music. It is interesting that a lot of us started playing around the same time in our lives and still enjoy it today (years later).

I play because it's in me & it's got to come out.

As far back as I can remember I've wanted to play guitar--and I still do.

To paraphrase Groucho, "Any girl that would want to hook up with me because of my playing I wouldn't want to be with. No taste."
Beatles what got me into playing back in 65. I never even thought about guitar as way to score with the ladies.... crikey!
Stopped in 77 for some reason. Was out on stress disability in 98 and dug out nylon string I got by trading a lid for in 76. OMG. Something I could do that didn't hurt what was left of my brain! So been playing and collecting regularly since then.
Every day without rain I hump a guitar and usually my Fender Mini Mustang down 20 minute walk to spot on beach to hang with friends. During low season in Thailand usually solo, but some of my buds should be rolling in soon on annual migration. I love to play with others (usually): music is like sex in that you can get the job done by yourself but it's so much more fun with company.

"For fun" and "I think guitars are pretty"

Been playing for about 32 years. Got my first guitar at 15 years old (Yamaha acoustic), and have had a LOT of old cheap no-name, or 'store brand' guitars & amps acquired at garage sales, or trades with friends for various other junk.

Eventually, the guitar quality gradually climbed with time and better barters, until current day.
Now; with 7 guitars, and 4 amps...I am at a point where I am playing far more than trading and/or purchasing.

I also like buying low end guitars, and working a nice "project" on them.
My 2011 Squire Standard Tele is complete, and now I have started working on a 2009 Squire Bullet Strat that's gonna be real nice as well when finished.

Just having fun with guitars!

I did not vote either, for reasons already given, no choice reflected my reason, just the enjoyment of being able to. I am now 69, and started at the age of 15, learning to play by ear, inspired by the music of those times; the Everly Brothers and Ventures. In my earlier years, played in groups, but family and work prevailed over the long haul. Nonetheless, never lost my interest and love to play.

It would be cool to be a young player with all the information and advantages of the internet and accessible gear that today's young players have. However, there is something to be said about growing up as a guitarist during some of what could be considered the glory years of guitar playing. The late 60's, 70's and 80's were a very exciting time to be a guitarist. There was just so much energy at the time, there still is energy, it was just more mysterious and people would go crazy over it.

Advantages today for all ages. Now we have the capability of going on the internet, and browse through pictures, videos, specifications, and descriptions of instruments and effects pedals, etc... to see if one is even interested in pursuing said item, before driving to the nearest guitar/music store to actually try one out for ourselves. Big advantage indeed! Especially at todays gas prices---save gas on GAS.
