I'm 58 years old. About 6 years ago I took my (then) teenaged son to the local music store to buy drumsticks. I remember walking into the store and seeing all the guitars hanging on the walls and thinking that here I was surrounded by the culture and community that produced the music I had loved all my life and yet I felt no connection to it. I felt like an outsider. I envied the people who were trying out guitars...grabbing one off the wall and just playing. I wished I could be one of them.

That feeling didn't really leave me and about a year later I decided I was going to try to learn to play. It was difficult for me....I'm not a natural and had no musical training. But I stuck with it and now I can play....not great but good enough to enjoy it.

I play guitar because it makes me happy.....it gives me a wonderful sense of accomplishment and has allowed me to feel part of a community that I think is really cool...musicians.

This is a good assessment. My wife says I have a lot of new friends since I became more active with my music. I tell her that I prefer being around musicians. There's a common geekieness that we share. Did I spell geekieness correctly? :D

I'm 57 (and a half)

I started playing @ my 8th birthday when I got my first guitar.

I got quite serious about it at age 11.

At 15, there wasn't a day that would go when where I didn't pickup a guitar.

At this stage,, it's just part of who I am.

I still get a guitar in my hand everyday.

Similar feelings on my part.
Guitar, slide guitar, harp and vocals are all a part of "letting loose" something that may be ignored or rejected in regular conversation. I love to record, I love to jam, but if I had to choose only one music-based activity, it would be live performances.

I hate the set up and the break down, but those few precious moments, whether it be one song or forty songs, are some of the best moments in life, for my own personal pleasure. I have many other great moments--with the Armadillo Teen or Lady Armadillo, but my time on stage is for me.

I agree, but I find I'm developing both an addiction to, and an affliction from, playing on stage. I love getting up there and want to do it more, but I get so hyper from the experience that I have a tough time sleeping the night after a show. Since I usually have to work the next day, this has become a problem for me. An enjoyable one, but a problem none the less.

Because I have no talent at it at all, so when I accomplish something with it, its a real rush.

I play for the fun of learning now, but I remember when I watched my friend (I was 11 years old I think) play "Bad to the Bone" and "Smoke on the Water" I thought is was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Then he asked if I wanted to try and handed me his guitar, I was hooked. I really enjoy learning songs and trying to understand what the artist was thinking when they wrote it. It's like a window into someone's mind.

I started to play because I was inspired by EC in Derek & The Dominos. I graduated to playing in bands for years, and if the right set of folks come along I would do a band thing again. But mostly now just to spend time with my drummer son!

That's a really cool reason. My dad and I did hobbies together for years and I will always value that time.

Ladies? I've been married decades, I can't even impress the wife any more...
Fame? What, and be down there with Kim and Miley?
Money? Only if people end up paying me to stop.
