I remember the War version of this. You also just inspired me to post something on FUnk thread. In the 90's there was a rapper named GURU who put out a series of albums called Jazzmatazz. Instead of sampling Jazz tracks he brought in Jazz musicians like Roy Ayres and Ramsey Lewis to play on it.

Great choice, Mike.

You’ll often hear Rumble in this house. A simple song named by the suggestion of Phil Everly (originally the song was called Oddball), it was banned on many radio stations because of gang connection, and it presented a power chord and live distortion with holes poked in the amp’s speakers. It had a huge impact, and with several updated versions it still does. Most every band in my hometown played it in the early 60s. Link hit the mark with this 1958 goodie.

Here’s his 1977 “Switchblade” which seems to pair with Rumble. Arguably, it may not be the slickest of guitar playing, but it goes to show that using all of your instrument with mojo and making it your own can do wonders.

Thanks, Link.

That is a great video Gary. Link Wray has an album photo of him holding a white Supro Dual-tone. Cool sounding guitar, I found it difficult to keep in tune.

Very cool, Rollie. I did not know that and nice you had one in your hands. This may be of related interest:

I believe in coincidence, but too much has come my way lately, and my Irish superstition is freaking me out.

Two days ago I was writing on the Forum and back to back public announcements ran that depicted what I was writing as I proceeded. One was about starving children and the other I don’t recall. One coincidence I can handle, but both at the precise time?

I mention this here because I started a PVR video as I began this reply post about Link Wray. About two minutes into it, and with the post begun, without my prior knowledge, guess who appears on the TV. You got it. Link Wray! The documentary starts off and there is the man (or look alike) playing Rumble. I swear, I honestly did not expect that.
Maybe, the ghost of Link Wray exists. I hope his talent is passed on to me, or maybe he disliked my version at the party on Saturday night.

Thank you for the link Gary. FZ had many guitars and the duo-tone was probably one of the heaviest, the fiber-glass body was massive and did not know about the aluminium neck but always wondered why the neck didn't move. Interesting tale about Link, he might have been smiling in your direction. :D

It’s Falien Off by Argent is an incredible piece of work IMHO. Great arrrangement and playing. The lead speed and execution is a great example of shredding the needle. (See how I did that?) The bass? Beautiful and outstanding. Loved the whole thing, and it just goes to show you can put the pedal to the metal and still sound great. Can’t say that is always the case though. Myself included. :P
Excellent post, SBLS.

A little old school:

Before there was Ringo, before there was Moon, before there was Baker and Bonham, Watts and Paice and . . . there was Sandor and a lot of unique experimental recordings. Musical genius Phil Spector knew a good thing when he hired him:

 Don’t know about that; but, it’s in my DNA and several copies of LTBD and a few versions are never far from reach.

I and a lot of drummers owe a lot to Sandy in getting started, and I always thought he was so laid back until I got to see Cozy Cole about 10 feet from me. Those guys could drum up a storm without a workout. Sandy deserves a lot of credit not only for his style, but for some of his recording techniques that have been adopted.

I know this thread is for instrumentals, but since lyrics have often been added to instrumentals allow me to make this exception in honour of Sandy:

So much for old school being old school. :D
