The year was 1966. Leon Russell contributed to the album Walking Beat and Sandy Nelson freaked us out with this oddity:

Re: Cream

Drummers are chosen to be better or best for a variety of playing methods and innovation. While it is true guitarists can do the same, drummers can do numerous styles and techniques simultaneously. An example would be Rock with your left and Latin with your right, and so on and so on. I’m workin’ on it. Okay! I give up.
It’s simply what you play, but how. Copying skill is overrated. Marching bands can prove that, and rudiments are tools of the trade. Speed schmeed. No dynamics - fail! Popularity? That’s okay. I’d like that, however, it doesn’t make me a killer musician just because I’m popular. Typical Rolling Stone has promoted the popularity and proven that fact just like the RRHOF. Not hard to agree with this or that or those or them putting somebody at the top of the list.; but, in my books very often there is no clear best. Each era has their legends and, because of history and methods, most every era has quantum leaps in performance skills based on those that came before them. I like to look to those who have contributed or can hold their own for today’s world. A bunch of beats, fast, loud, technical, full of double or triple pedals, a kazillion cymbal sizes, funky numerous drum shells, or whatever doesn’t make the passing grade if it doesn’t have a musical method or approach with nuances. Otherwise, it’s flat without flavour. As I said earlier, real drumming is many things, and those great band members deserve it as does the audience.

Let’s not forget drummers that double up like guitarist Dave Grohl, vocalists like Phil Collins, and others. Does that count? Probably not. But some are indeed awesome drummers.

Ringo came along when big band drummer legends ruled and Surf drummers promoted single stroke rolls. Keith Moon took it all and added icing that helped to give us live modern Rock drumming in a symphonic way. Ginger Baker was a name that made it to this side of the pond mostly amongst drummers at first (but not for long). Bonham followed when the stage was set and shared by many, and when the great Buddy Rich died, it was Neil Peart who was revealed to have been Buddy Rich’s favourite drummer.

My favourite? Well. Rich and Sandy for sure, and maybe Keith, a pick of today’s polished drummers, and a who’s who list of studio cats; but, some years back I heard a disc from the Budokan, and it was one of if not the best drumming I’ve ever heard. I know he was Japanese, the label was red, and I never found out his name. :?
My favourite guitar player? Hmm? Same thing. Who’s up next? :P
That said, Ginger Baker is a fine drummer, even with acceptable mistakes because the overall makes up for it, and he gets the passing grade. Thanks, for that Classic ‘66 vibe from Cream, Rollie.

Although, not a favourite instrumental, I ran across this related interview with Ginger after I had written the former. I hope you’ll forgive me for adding it here; but, I think the Lizards will find it interesting. He talks of Cream, Hendrix, Clapton, Bonham, and more. Can't say I disagree with him. YMMV.

Glad you liked it! They were always one of my favorite obscure bands from back in the day. A drummer in a garage band I was in turned me on to them. They never had any commercial success here in the states that I know of. I usually had to plow through piles of albums at used record stores to find their stuff back then. Life before the internets was hard lol : )

Cool Apache video, SBLS. Glad I got to see that awesome dancing. Thanks, for another blast from the past.

Always good to see and hear Chet, Marky. Thanks.

As for The Entertainer -it’s one of my least favourites having refused a CD from my father because of it’s saturated play on radio and TV which made it difficult to show up for work during those days. YMMV Still, I would gladly have collected the royalties. :P

I know it’s Disco, but it’s good Disco. :P
It may not be the original soundtrack, however, on headphones or speakers it’s great IMHO, and it’s in my vinyl collection right next to George Harrison and Neil Young.
