This made me laugh a little while ago - I was on my laptop reading emails, facebook, and the Fender Lounge, etc... and I happen to turn and look at my '95 Fender Strat sitting there all pretty in its guitar stand. So, I picked it up, and decided to strum it acoustically for some reason.

I have no idea or the reason why, but I started noodling around with open chords, and found myself playing this chord progression:

G.....Am.....Bm.....C.... and back to G, repeating.

Then all of the sudden I said to myself, "I know that song!" and decided to strum along and sing a part of it.

G....Am...Bm...............C.............G....Am
HERE......MAKING EACH DAY OF THE YEAR

Bm................C.............F#m7..........B
CHANGING MY LIFE WITH A WAVE OF HER HAND

F#m7.....B.......Em....................Am.........Am7...D7
NOBODY CAN, DENY THAT THERE'S SOMETHING THERE

How many times have you sat there and noodled around on your guitar, strumming chords, or fiddling around with progressions, and somehow you end up playing a very well known famous tune?

"Here, There, and Everywhere" came out in 1966. Good Lord, that would be 48 years ago!!! I'm getting old!!! :(

Been there, done that. When it happens I don't know if I'm happy or aggravated. One minute I'm thinking hey that sounds pretty good, I've got something here. :D Then when it dawns on me, I'm saying crap that's already a song. :(

And people don't even notice that they're doing it.

Or they do it on purpose to make a hit:

Mind you, finding "domestically composed" songs on that basis turned out to be really fun. And of course, the gift keeps on giving.

Another thing I've found (back when I was in a band) is that when working on songs and arrangements, etc...

Verse1
Verse2
Chorus/main hook
{short guitar lick, transition back to verse melody}

When I would come up with an idea of a guitar lick, the guys would sometimes look at me and say, "That's cool, but it sounds too Clapton -ish..." And I would have to come up with something a little different. Well hey, it's not *MY* fault that EC is my #1 guitar influence!

I wrote a song once and after about 3 days realized it was an ELO song.

I do this all the time  kind of a bummer when you think you've written something original.

 , I think it happens/has happened from the beginning in music and art of all types. If someone see's or hear's something that makes a strong impression it then gets reflected in that persons next contributions to the music/art world. IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian) :D
