Jack Bruce was the consummate musician,he was not only an incredible bass player but along with writing beautiful and often complicated melodies,he was able to weave great story lines into his songs. The music world has lost another brightly shining star but his light will far out live his natural life. God Bless you.Jack Bruce, you will be loved, respected and revered by millions for many years to come.

I know a lot of my heroes are getting up there in age, yet it's still a surprise when one passes on. Thanks Jack, you created a lot of my favorite music. RIP

Jack Bruce is a still frequently cited influence by top players today. A very impressive recorded catalog and tons of live gig recordings in a variety of genres will continue to influence players.

Here is yet another top bassist of the electric era that started on an upright acoustic. Mr. Bruce went to a Fender Bass VI from upright and then onto short scale Gibsons through the Cream days and eventually to a fretless Warwick Thumb. His signature Warwick is a 34" scale Gibson-esque looking bass though. His tone from about 1965 on was "in your face," over-driven and mid heavy with one of the most aggressive attacks known to bass.

Mr. Bruce wrote or had a hand in writing some really iconic songs during the Cream years. One of the first songs I learned to play in 1968 was "Sunshine Of Your Love." Not many musicians can say they wrote a song, got a gold record for it and it was covered by Jimi Hendrix either! It is a fact that Hendrix played a live instrumental cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love" about as often as his own signature tunes starting in '68. Actually the main riff of the song (attributed to Bruce) and most of the lyrics (attributed to Pete Brown) were said to have been inspired by and written immediately after Bruce & Clapton attended a Jimi Hendrix Experience show in London in '67. The 1968 single became one of the most frequently covered songs for decades and cemented Cream into rock royalty. That song is a true evergreen, and those are rare...but not as rare as a bass player like Jack Bruce.

Here's something a little different. His jazz group doing a song he wrote when he was 12 years old.

This one was recorded 46 years to the day, before Jack died. He and Eric really tear it up on this version of I'm So Glad.
