An elegant exit, but I'd expect no less. Good luck for the future.

You appear to lack basic empathy for your fellow man. You could have simply stopped posting.

What do you expect when you act like a complete jackass?

Please, oh please don't ever come back.

Usually I stay clear of this type of thing, but "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." I guess none of you live in a glass house. Just saying

Go do a search of the OP's posts, read many of them, and perhaps you'll have a better understanding.
Yes, a few threw stones, but others are just happy to not have to contend with the nature and 'tone' of many of his posts a midst an interesting thread....IMO that's not throwing stones.
And, the question about just leaving quietly seems to be a good one to me.

Given the username, I would have expected a more dramatic exit, along the lines of
Look on my work, ye mighty, and despair!

Anyhow:

Freedom of speech is something most countries represented by the membership on this board recognize as basic rights. Derek has the right to start a thread about his health so long as it doesn't break the rules of the forum. Frank has the right to express dismay that he sees the board slowly turning into Facebook. He is not the only one who feels that way. Some pretty respected members of this forum have strongly expressed similar sentiments. They have that right. And their argument has merit. We have seen more than our share of pointless threads, many of which are not unlike the SNL skit in which the teenager posts, "I brushed my hair and now I'm eating chips."

Should Frank have posted his opinion using that tone? Probably not. He could and should have said it more diplomatically.

Should members have pounced on him the way they did? Absolutely not. He has the same rights as anyone else and it's not their place to be his judge.

Rob correctly identified the Lounge as being a place where personal threads are tolerated. Frank should have recognized that fact. He still has the right to express his concern that the forum should be about making music with Fender instruments. The others involved should have recognized that fact. Despite what people may think, nobody won this argument.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

People come and people go. It's better to just move on when you don't enjoy it any more. I saw nothing wrong with Derek's post, it's been a long time issue for him and some here have followed along with it. If you don't like something just move along.

One thing Ive noticed. A lot of people are worried about the "tone" things are said in. My thought is those are the same kind of people who want to broadcast their personal problems to the entire world via the www.
When someone posts something for the entire world to see, trying to get sympathy, someone should expect to get negative feedback as well. So go the pitfalls of trying to get attention via the interwebs.
