Last Sunday in a hospital in Exeter in the Southwest of England Raphael Ravenscroft passed away. That name probably isn't known by 1% of Forum members but his haunting sax riff is well known enough world-wide.Raphael Ravenscroft was the sax man who played the opening riff for Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street".Those few notes really helped, put that song on its rapid ascent up the charts. In his 60 short years he worked with many of the top acts in music such as Pink Floyd,Marvin Gaye,ABBA and Tom Cochrane and Red Ryder. There wasn't a cause of death given but at 60 you'd figure that he'd have a few more years left anyway.

Sad news. R.I.P.
Like you say, that was a brilliant riff that burned the song into the mind and probably launched it to great heights.

As someone about to hit 50, 60 does seem far too young.

Correct in that I didn't know his name but that opening riff on Baker St is so iconic, everyone can whistle that one.
