Telecasters have an undeserved rep of being country or rhythm guitars. Sure, you can play that too on them, but you can play a lot more. If anything, I love playing my Teles for bass heavy music with distortion and no reverb. Which is as far from country as you can get. The sustain is better than most guitars, and they have a good solid feel to them.
Everybody should have a Tele. And a Strat. And an SG. And ... :D

And the guitar solo on Stairway to Heaven was recorded on one.

I wish I had pulled the trigger on a 2010 Am Std Tele at my local GC but waited a day too long

That's exactly what I thought until I played one and liked it. Then started watching some Tele-Vids or Television  Really nice guitars that have exceptional tone. I don't think of many guitars as strictly attached to one genre now. It's strange how Teles and Strats are so similar and different at the same time. You could put Tele PU's on a Strat and vise-versa but it's just not the same.

The great Canadian jazz guitarist Ed Bickert has played a Tele exclusively for his 50 plus year career. With his unmodified Standard Tele,he has played some of the most mellow and lush jazz licks you could ever hear and actually would make you think that you were listening to an early '50s ES-5 etc. rather than a solid body Fender. If you make frequent use of the tone control, you can use the Tele quite successfully for any genres of music.

I regret not picking up a Stratocaster XII when they were making them. Have missed out winning a bid on eBay, too.

Maybe Fender will re-issue the Fender Electric XII. Soon, I hope. Very soon.

Back in the early 80's there were 2 Squier Vintage Series Stats at one local store in town. One was a white 50's style (1 piece maple neck, single ply 7 screw pg) the other black early 60's (rosewood slab neck 3 ply pg). Both had truss rod at the body end, vintage hardware and an aged tint clearcoat . Also the bridge pieces had FENDER stamped on them (unlike other Squiers at the time),vintage type made in USA pickups and correct hardware. They were the only two I've ever seen since. Should have bought both, didn't buy either and still regret it.

A Gibson Firebird, as late as last week. :(
I hope another good one comes up, because, well, how can I feel complete without a Firebird?

What is it you like about the Firebird? I played a Firebird bass and didn't much care for how unballanced it felt to me. How do they sound?

There are a couple of things I like about the (normal) reverse Firebird.
- Not having much of an upper bout makes it easier to angle the guitar up.
- The one-piece neck-through-body with the bridge and nut attached to the same piece of wood changes how it resonates.

What I don't like is the ugly white pickguard, and the distance from the pickup switch to the volume switches.

As for how they sound, they're resonant, and the mini-buckers do have a bit of "bite" to them. It's a guitar that asks for no more than a good boost/drive pedal and a clean amp.

I don't find the Firebird unbalanced, but then again my "go-to" guitar is an SG, so I may be more used to top-heavy, or it may just be how I sling them.
But I have to admit, I love the ringing Firebird sound. Johnny Winter did some great stuff with his.

Totally agree (except for the pickguard, which doesn't bother me, and the pickup switch which also isn't an issue to me).

I'll also raise you a: The shape of it gives you excellent upper fret access, not unlike an SG. The lack of a set neck joint means your hand fits nicely around the neck all the way up. Plus the angled upper bout, and the cut out lower means nothing is in your way there, either.

Love the sound, and the feel. Plus it's easily the coolest looking guitar I own!

There's just something about a neck through that plays like nothing else!

Now to find a used one with a trem. I can't bring myself to modify the one I have...

Back on topic: ^^^^ was it for the longest time, until I scraped up the loot to buy it.

Now it's a Gibson Les Paul Traditional PRO II, in Merlot. I simply do not have $2400 to spend on yet another guitar. MAN that one felt good in my hands! Sounded killer, too thru a Blues Deluxe- both with and w/o the '69 fuzz. The Merlot color just looks so pretty...

Almost pulled the trigger a few year ago on a Squier Classic Vibe Tele Custom. That might quench my thirst.

Might as well. The CV Teles are great guitars!

No, they don't have the cachet of a real Fender one, but they don't come with the pricetag, either.

I have the same one as in the picture, and love it.

I checked out some videos, and the guitar had a Tele-like vibe about them - mean, raw and no messin' around.

I have noticed that a lot videos stick to the dirty side for the most part. I'd like to hear waht they sound like clean.

I found this one:

Note the "ringing" sustain, which I think is the most unique about the Firebird, and due to the neck-through design.

I still kick myself for not picking one up at an affordable price when I had the chance.
But a new Firebird is still cheaper than the neck-throughs Fender can offer:

Now that I think of it, I regret not buying one of the Japanese made Squier Strats when they were first introduced way back around 1982-83 or so. I had the chance to try one a couple of years ago and they are right up there with the MIA strats that are being produced today.

Last year, there was a Squier 70's Vibe Strat for $250.
I went to the music shop, and played and played and played on that thing.
It felt and sounded surprisingly good, especially brand new for 250?

Man, I wish I'd took it home. :(

Yeah the modern day Squiers and Epi's are silly-good. The low cost makes them a no brainer. I have a CV Tele, a VM Strat, and an Epi LP, and all three are really nice. They all cost more than $250, but still...

Had the same experience you did with the LP- except it DID go home with me. Just wish I could have swung the Blues Deluxe it was plugged into as well. Killer combo!!

When I'm thinking Fender or Mesa Boogie amps, I think single-coil blues.
For buckers, I tend to think Marshall/Orange/Vox for blues.
Of course, my preconceptions might be all wrong. It's probably all in my head. :)

GC opened in Portland in 2000. Grand opening was greatly insane. Decided I needed (wanted) a Guild, so got a blond Starfire 3 (the hollow with bigsby). Being far more ignorant than I should have been, I could not get it to stay in tune (nut sauce?) so took it back and got the Starfire IV instead. Nice guitar (duh) but wish I'd have stuck with the 3. Love full hollows and bigsby (now I know what to do..). Reissues are mahogany and just not the same...
