Right now, I am listening to Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour 1974

Other live albums that are my favorite include:

Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys
Jimi Hendrix - Stages '68 ( Part of a Box Set of the same name 1967 - 1970)
Live Cream - Volume 2
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live at the El Mocambo

My favourite live album is and always will be Jimi Hendrix-Band of Gypsys ,that album contains the most incendiary and brilliant live guitar playing that was ever put to tape. The song "Machine Gun" alone just stunned the guitar playing world when the album was first released, guitar paying so incredibly over the top had never been heard.Back in these days, all the hammer ons and pull offs that he did weren't a regular part of every guitar player's bag of tricks so all the incredible sounds that Jimi coaxed from his guitar at that concert were just other-worldly to just about every other guitarist alive. To this day a lot of the world's most revered guitarists regard this album to be the quintessential live album of all time.

I love live albums, even if they are recorded poorly. Something about the energy and immediacy of the moments captured. I also like hearing what a band actually sounds like without studio embellishments (though I like those too, so go figure).

So my "favorites" would be the ones that I heard as a young(er) whipper-snapper: 1) the first one was Steppenwolf Live in 1970(?) followed by 2) Humble Pie Performance Rockin' the Fillmore (weren't all great live albums recorded there?). That Humble Pie album is actually my favorite "Frampton Comes Alive" album. Haven't listened to either in years though. May have to re-consider on a re-evaluation listen.

AC/DC live at Donnington.

I've just heard that Malcolm Young has been diagnosed with dementia and is off their next album/tour. What a loss, arguably one of the best rythym guitarists of my time.. :(

Actually, live albums are great for 70s bands because often the studio production from that era was very anemic. The live album helped capture something much more closer to the live sound, often with MUCH better guitar tones and more extensive guitar work. Here are the best live albums from that period, and all are FAR better than the studio counterparts. I would not put AC/DC in this list as I find their studio work very well produced (from Let There Be Rock anyway), and the ONLY live Rush album worth listening to in my opinion is All The Worlds A Stage, but I won't add it to this list because their studio albums also sound pretty good.

Here are the best live albums from that period (everyone below is a 'must have' in my book)

Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous
UFO - Strangers In The Night
Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East
Foghat - Live
Pat Travers - Go For What You Know
Kiss - Alive & Alive II
Blue Oyster Cult - On Your Feet Or On Your Knees
Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo
Deep Purple - Made In Japan
Kansas - Two For The Show
Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes (with Uli Roth on lead guitar)
Derringer - Live

Although their studio production is great (unlike those above), these two special mentions captures a totally different side to these two, in particular:

Who - Live At Leeds
Led Zeppelin - Song Remains The Same

There are others for both lists, too...

I could only narrow my favourites down to 3:

1) Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsy's
2) David Bowie - The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars (Live)
3) Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

8) 8) 8)
