That would be live albums that don't have a studio album.
Like ELP "Pictures At An Exhibition"

But live concerts are, in my opinion, always inferior as albums. You don't capture the show and the atmosphere on a record or CD.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yup... I saw Frampton back in the late 70's, after his famous live album was out. He put on a hell of a show! Amazing musicianship, and legendary use of the talk-box!

If I remember right (things were a little fuzzy back then  8) ), it was at a big hockey arena in New York. To put it mildly, the whole arena turned into a massive cloud of "smoke".... You could have been 100% clean, straight, level headed, etc... but by the end of the show, you (and everyone else) was completely wasted! Remember those types of concerts?

For me ,and this was crucial to me as a developing guitarist way back around 1975, it was Kiss Alive ! I had been playing guitar for around 3 years when that came out , and hearing Ace Frehley's searing solos live made me want to rock, and rock hard !!!!

The Rolling Stones "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" album. First Stones album I ever owned, and I think it's still their best live disc, down to this day.

ZZ Top "Live on Rockpalast" (1980?)
Ironically, although I'm probably the biggest ZZ Top can on earth, side one of "Fandango" isn't on my favorites list...however, the second half of "XXX" (1999) is pretty dang good, especially with guest vocalist (!) Jeff Beck (!?!?!)...

Joe Ely "Live at Liberty Lunch" (1990)...one half of the soundtrack to my 21st year. (The other half was the Arc Angels' eponymous album).

Tuff decision...You all have thrown out some fine ones...but these three really make me want to grab a guitar and crank it!

Cream - Wheels of Fire (For all out loud rock and roll)
Derek & the Dominos Live at Fillmore (just for the wealth of licks to steal from)
EC Was Here (some of the finest live blues you will ever hear)

T2

I liked live albums because they usually had the bands' best songs on them, so they were a great way to introduce yourself to the music of a band you weren't familiar with. There were so many great ones from back in the day, I can't really pick just one. But the ones that come immediately to mind are:

Yessongs, by Yes
All the World's a Stage, by Rush
The Jimi Hendrix Concerts, which had some of Jimi's best live performances.

That was a classic, it had a lot of rawness and energy.
