I got a phone call the other night from my old drummer from the last band I was in late last year before I said to hell with it and sold all of my Electric guitars. It turns out that him along with the Bassist have gotten rid of the band cancer ( IE, 2nd guitarist/vocalist ) who was the cause of all of the BS which led me to leave in the first place and they want to start all over but this time, leave it as a 3 piece. Now these 2 guys I consider friends and are great people who I have no problem working with so, I'm going to give it a shot and see where it takes us. Now I do have my 1988 Fender Studio 85 combo and my Acoustics but, after speaking to my wife, I'm only allowed $200.00 to spend on a electric guitar. Now there's no way I'm bringing my Fender Acoustics to GC for a swap and nor have I entertained the thought of selling them, especially my CD60CE in Mahoghany which I love. My local GC has a brand new , Squier Affinity Sunburst Strat w/ a Maple fretboard which I personally don' t have a problem with because the new Squiers that are coming out are really great for the buck. But at the same time, I see some really decent looking Squier Standard Strats on GC's used gear section of their website that are under the price range I mentioned. I just want to be cautious and not buy something used that I would regret, so what would you guys do if you were in my position ? I've considered a used Epiphone LP Gothic which I used to have but can't find any for the price I'm allowed to spend.

I think at that price, Epiphones and Squiers are your best bet. They do make excellent guitars, but be sure to try out several different guitars (same model, once you zero-in on the model), because their quality will vary more than in the Gibson or Fender guitars.
I'd also definitely look at used ones. Perhaps a used Epi will get you in the price range?

I personally would probably go for used Epi. Squiers are fine guitars, but the pickups are bad and, since they're single coil, there will be far more hum in those than in humbuckers. The humbuckers in Epi probably won't be something worth dying for either, but they at least won't have as much hum (I really, really hate hum  )

+1...They are out there. Just don't be in a huge hurry, there are always some good guitars for sale on CL, just sort thru the junk.

Put an awesome pickup in the hole of one of your acoustics. Used peaveys and Ibanez are pretty cheap as well. Heck, you can probably get one new for 200.

Agree about Craig's.... lot's of Mexi's out there...

Go with Cash in hand... even if you see ads for $300-$350... go and scope it out... wave the cabbage in their face and talk them down.
Remember... Cash talks... BS walks... You'll find something decent 8)

+1 on a cheap MIM Strat on Craigslist. The thing is when you don't need one they are everywhere then when you need one there are none! I think it is some sort of unwritten rule.

New and recent Squier & Epiphone models are better than ever for the money but also add to those options the Yamaha Pacifica line like the PAC012DLX for $180 brand new. Honest the Yamaha Pacifica models are extremely decent and perpetually overlooked. They have very good hardware and above average electronics. One of them is out of your price range but the ones in your price range are decent too.

Some of the 80's/90's USA made Peavey electrics are super and sometimes can be found sub $200 too, but are a tough find in good shape.

I would have to disagree with your opinion about the pickups being bad in Squiers , at least today's models. True single coils hum but that's why Strats have a 5 way pup switch. The 2 & 4 position eliminate that hum. Also some of you have mentioned Craig's List . I have looked but I have not seen any MIM Fender Standards for 200 bucks in my area and I won't check nationwide on CL for a MIM Strat. At least with GC used gear section , I have a general idea of what they have and they usually have a star rating as to the condition of what they're selling. I've bought used gear from them in the past and have never been left down. I'm not a fan of Peavey or Ibanez ,especially Ibanez because those are IMO, Metal guitars which is something I don't want. I saw several nice looking Squier Standards and a couple of Vintage Modified Strats also on their page last night so now it's a matter of deciding which one to get. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Vintage Modified because of the vintage style tuners and Duncan designed pups. I've heard a lot of good things about those guitars and my local GC can not keep them in stock.

For $200 it doesn't really matter what you buy, you're going to end up with a piece of junk.

Check out what is available for Classic Vibe's from Squire on the second hand market.

My bud has a strat and a tele. I don't think he paid more than 250 for each one with a case.

200 bucks is not a lot of money to invest, I agree that it's hard to find something really good at that price point but these,, well, I can tell you that if you find one of these Classic Vibe guitars, you wont really have to worry about having a piece of junk. They are really decent guitars.

If I could get one for $200.00 believe me I would. I've tried them out in the past and IMO, they blow away the MIM Fender Standard Strats.

Well guys, here's what I ended up getting and it cost me a extra $75.00 but it was worth it. It's a 2010 Goldtop Epiphone 1950's Les Paul w/ P-90s and this baby has the best of both worlds IMO. I can get both, a single coil and a humbucker type sound out of this thanks to the P-90's which I've never had before. The seller bought this brand new a few years ago and thought he was going to be a rock star but, it turned out he couldn't get the hang of playing so it's been sitting in his closet. He originally wanted $300.00 but I sweet talked him down to $275.00 and he just dropped it off over a half hour ago.

You can get a lot of mileage out of the P90's. How heavy is it?

Ah ! Perfect! That is a good score!

you will like p90s,

be aware, they're probably going to make a lot of noise if you are using a lot of gain in your tone stack, I think more so that an strat or tele style single coil. I have an SG Classic with P90s, They are NASTY - but in a real good way .. but the "hum" oyvhey! the hum!

worth it..

Congrats!
