Personally, I would not mod the guitar for a whammy... but... It's your's.. and if you must... can go w/ a Bigsby style whammy. Yes, you will have to drill some holes to make it happen.
Enjoy 8)

This is from a previous post but I am sure they will give you an answer, I do not think you will need to cut your guitar

I think I would go this route or get another tremolo equipped guitar. For the money you would spend on a good solution you could just about get a Modern Player with the Vibrato Bridge. That's a nice looking guitar you have, I have messed up nice guitars in the past with similar plans. Not saying you would make the same mistake I have, just trying to give solid advice.

I did not see the Fender bridges in the previous posts. If those are a direct replacement, that looks like a good solution.

Since it is a hardtail, I would look at a bigsby type. It would bolt on the same way you can bolt one on to a telecaster.

Okay, I guess I will be the conscientious objector. Don't ruin your nice Mustang with a Bigsby (don't get me wrong, I like Bigsby's ... but not the idea of adding one to your Mustang). Just keep the Mustang as is, and buy some other Trem guitar (Mustang or other). You will seriously kill the value of that guitar if you do this mod, and ... if you don't know what you are doing, you will easily hose the overall intonation. Just saying ...
