Looking for any good ideas. I am going to replace the PU's on a Strat I'm fixing up. The stock PU's (Squier) must go, they are not so good. The guitar however is awesome and worthy of an upgrade. I have two Texas Specials that I like and are putting those in the middle and neck. I am going with a humbucker at the bridge. This is where my question is. What wiring configuration would you go with? The single coils are the same polarity so no noise cancelling between them.
I could use a 5-way switch and have all the basics except, in the 4 position I could wire one coil from the bridge and the neck for a Tele type config. Also doing this for the bridge and middle (one coil from bridge). This would give me noise cancelling in the 1,2,4 positions.
I'm just trying to come up with a creative useful scheme for the PU selections in the 2 and 4 positions. 1,3,5 will be the PU's like normal.
Also, I'm not opposed to adding a small switch for something like neck PU always on.
Any ideas?

At this point, I'd be inclined to live with the pups it came with. If that wont do, Guitar Fetish or Tonerider. Unless it already has Tonerider in it.

I'm really happy with my CV Telecaster's sound. If the pups are indeed Tonerider, I'd love to hear their Strat pickups.

But, I'm the cheapest mofo out there. Dont go by me....Good luck.

Unfortunately I don't know a great deal about wiring setups but one thing I do know (from an American Special Strat with Texas Specials) is that they are really designed to be used as a complete set because the middle pickup is reverse wound so that in positions 2 and 4 you get a kind of humbucker effect.
Someone else out there who knows more about the electrical side of things can probably explain it better but in my opinion you're better off using 3 Texas Specials as a complete set like they are intended. Or, use a different type altogether.

I think your idea for the Tele config is a cool way to go... cancel out the noise... still have the spank out of those texas specials... without the hum. You lose the "Quack Tone"... but if that's no biggie.. I say go for it 8)

You could wire it up so that you had:

1 Humbucker;
2 Full humbucker plus middle;
3 Middle
4 Middle and neck
5 Neck,

Then add a mini toggle or push/pull pot to give you a coil split on the humbucker, so you could go SSS.

I once did a strat with 3 mini-humbuckers wired as above with a mini-toggle to split them all and another for bridge always on so with two toggles or push pull pots this is possible.

For a HSS I like:

1 Full humbucker;
2 Split humbucker and middle;
3 middle
4 middle and neck
5 neck

The Seymour Duncan website has wiring diagrams that can help you figure all of these options out.

Couldn't you look at some of the wiring diagrams of some of the guitars on here that have the SSH configurations just to give you a idea ?

I can draw up the wiring plan. This is to get ideas for setups I may not have thought of.
Like:
1. full humbucker
2. mid-bridge (split bridge)
3. middle
4. bridge-neck (split bridge)
5. neck

I like the neck/bridge combination, very sweet. I would do a standard configuration as you've described above, except position 4 as neck/mid, and add a pushbutton or push-pull pot to add the bridge pup (split) to any position. So you can have the standard configuration, plus the neck/bridge (split bridge) in pos 5, or neck/mid/bridge (split bridge) in position 4 by simply pushing/pulling the added switch. :idea:

Yeah but guys, like I tried to point out earlier, a Texas Special middle pickup is reverse wound so that it produces a humbucker effect when combined with the bridge and neck pickups. Wouldn't that have a effect on the kind of set up your describing?
I'm not very educated when it comes to electronics so maybe you know something I don't but it seems to me that would have to effect something?!?

It is possible to determine the relative phases of two pickups without wiring it in if you can tell which way the coils are wound.

If the magnets at the top attract each other then they are reverse polarity, that should tell you if they'll cancel hum.

Worst case scenario is you'll have to open the guitar again, I usually put one string on and tune it near pitch, give it a quick test and see if it's ok to screw the thing together properly.

I know it's not everyone's taste, but this is what is going in the bridge position. They sound really nice there clean and of course with distortion. Also, it will have the output when split to go good with the neck and middle. It's hard to find examples of people playing through these clean, everyone wants to crank up the distortion in videos. The few I have found sounded really harmonically rich and smooth (not easy to do) in the bridge position. Also, not being stacked, it will have a coil RWRP for the other pickups that will work in parallel. Has anyone here tried a three switch on/off setup? Having a dedicated on/off for each pickup?
