ok so when i buy my new tele will guitar center tell me what style of tele it is? so i would know the pickguard would fit for sure

Well when you buy your tele from Guitar Center, it should tell you on the tag what model it is. Standard, AM Standard, Highway 1, Am Dlx etc. Those mentioned are all 8 hole, if you get into a Vintage re issue model then you are looking at a 5 hole (most likely) if it is a HH then you need to look for one that fits Humbuckers.

If it comes right down to it, just count the screws around the edge of the pickguard

You will most likely know because you are buying it.

hey mike...better to get a tele you like from the get go, youl connect with it better than if you have to dump tons of cash into customizing...find a nice neck, good feel, the right sound, and then comes color and other stuff...but teles are very versatile, id say almost as much (if not quite) as versatile as a strat.

They definately have a very distinct twang you dont get with the strat.

Some of the MIM Deluxe Teles have tortoise shell pickguards already.

Amen to that! I love Teles more than Strats, to me simple is better, and the bottom line on any guitar is that it's all in the wood, hardware, and construction. If that guitar isn't what you're looking for, all the chrome and pickguards in the world might not make it any better, and the same thing could go for pickups because the guitar itself DOES play a part in the formula.

I've known a guy for years that works on cars, and he gets pretty inventive (he once put a '72 VW Bug body on a '61 Bug chassis, and the Tag Office tried to argue with him with the title about what year it was-he won the argument, it wound up being a '61). One of his jokes is about 'Chrome Go-Fasters', the chrome accessories that people slap on car engines back in the day, and now wheel 'spinners'. His point (and mine) is that they look sharp, but they don't improve performance and can fall out of fashion in a heartbeat (anybody remember guitars with graphics?). Do what you like, but whether or not it's going to be permanent is entirely up to you.
