Margaret Hamilton set the standard for witches in that film. She actually was a sweet lady who loved children and was a preschool teacher before going to work on WOO. I interviewed her every Halloween for my radio show up until her death. She was very accommodating and full of grace being very unlike her most famous character. I still have very disturbing dreams about flying monkeys. I have a co-worker who has the same damage but his is a fear of little people. That was one powerful film, especially considering when it was made.

"Steel Magnolias" would be #2. Oh the horror!

Pit and the Pendulum scared the Cr@p our of me when I was 9, but my all time favorite is Plan 9 from Outer Space.

There is nothing like laughing your butt off at something that is supposed to be scary

I'm glad to see that "Poltergeist" was mentioned,I had forgotten all about it,but it was also one of the freakiest and scariest movies that I've ever seen. It's the movie that the well used line: "They're Heeerrreee." came from. That film llike "Manitou" dealt with native American spirits and curses.

The year that came out 1939, was a great year for movies. besides that classic, you also had " Gone With The Wind ", " Son Of Frankenstein" which was the last time that Boris Karloff played the monster. Then you also had " Of Mice And Men " which featured Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney Jr who would be more better known as The Wolf-Man but , he gave a really powerful performance as the dull witted Lenny in this film. If you ever get the chance to see it on TMC, do so, you won't regret it.

Too many of the newer "horror" movies aren't scary at all. Somewhere along the road, someone confused gore for horror, and these days every single "horror" movie is an action slasher. Which isn't scary at all - just mildly disgusting.

A good scary movie is where unexpected things occur, and people make fatal choices, but never because they're stupid, but because they don't know everything the viewer does. If there is blood or decapitations, that's not the scary part - that's the outcome of the scary part.
Hitchcock knew this. Stephen King (as a writer) knows this.
But the movies have gotten dumber and gorier.

I think Ringu was the last really scary movie I've seen (the American remake "The Ring" not so much).

I come to The Fender Lounge to view general guitar related discussions. Not to be rude, but I think this thread should be moved.

I've also read a few of your comments today and I honestly don't know how you made it into your 50's with such a thin skin.

This is the internet.

Well thanks for the imput as far as that is concerned. Now to get back to the subject of this which is Horror Films , do most of you prefer the classics from the 1930's through the 50's , or do you like today's films which rely on blood and gore more than actual acting and suspense ?

I know this may sound stupid ... but it was pretty scary at six years old watching 'Night Of The Living Dead' at 2am with my older brother (two years older) with all the lights off. Let's just say, we were bunking in the same room that night.

Other than that, the only other movie to scare me (and still to this day) is 'The Exorcist'. And that is because it is based on a true story, and quite accurate to what really happened; the child in real life was a little boy.

Night Of The Living Dead did freak me out when I first saw it way back in 1970. I was only 11 at the time and had never seen a film quite like it, but needless to say, I was hooked. The Exorcist on the other hand, did scare the holy bejeezus out of me when I first saw it in 1973 or was it 72 when it first came out ? I remember going home that night and going to bed with the lights on in my room . LOL.
