well, it depends where you go.

you can go to a Guitar Center and get one thats quite alot of money.
Or, you can go to a guitar store that isn't as big as Guitar Center, and get one for less than guitar centers but it may still be alot.

that middle sentence might not make sense but i tried

Go to http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ .

Do a search on "guitar effects pedals". That will show you all the pedals available, prices, reviews, etc. Also.....if you want to know what some of these effects sound like, do a search "boss effects pedals". It will give you a list of all the pedals, where you can click on sound files to hear what they all sound like.

ok so while we're on the topic of pedals what exactly is a wah wah pedal

Mike,

A wah is a over exaderated tone pot. It is like taking the tone pot on your guitar and rollin it back and forth by hand.

Pedala can do maythings, mainly broken into catagories like distortion/overdrive, fuzz, modulation.

The best way to figure out what pedals u like and or would use is to play a bunch of them..

Pedals range in price from 20 bucks to several hundred. What the pedal does, and the quality affects the price.

For a begginer, i would recommend looking at boss, they are a mid range priced pedal, that have set some of the standards for pedals. I uase several of them, and lots of pros use them too.

Hope this helps

Go to youtube and look up wah-wah pedals. They kinda sound like they mimic the human voice-(wah- wah).

The Basics:

A standard BOSS DS-1 Regular Distortion Pedal:
http://users.cs.cf.ac.uk/I.Whittick/Boss%20DS1.jpg

They work as circuits, creating different effects through your amp. You will need a patch cable from your pedal to your amp, a cable from your guitar to the pedal, and if you want to have a worry-free mindset, and AC adapter (otherwise have some 9v batteries handy.)

I'm looking for a pedal that gives a good 'Doppler' effect-one that sounds swooshy and raises/lowers pitch (think of a train going by when you're stopped at a crossing), almost like panning from one Stereo channel to another or like a Leslie-but NOT in stereo (I only use one amp at a time).

I think I've heard that some people can get by with Phase pedals, but I actually DON'T use very many pedals and haven't had the time to search one out. Any recommendations?

I use the mutron phaser, and i can get a leslie type effect out of it! It is the coolest phaser I have ever used.

i use a dunlop rotovibe through a 58 bassman (reissue) something about the wood box gives it a organic tone very similar to the old leslie cabinets
